I think he's referring to the standard HH-66 contact cement........most widely available that I know of.
-
HH-66 won't stick if both sides are dry but with one side tacky , like the patch, it works great. I don't know what they recommend, I've never read the can.
Lowes and Home Depot sell it also. I went into home Depot to look at some tools and noticed they had torx bit sockets for $2. When I walked over to the auto parts store nearby they had lower quality sockets for over twice the price.
-
If you read the can it says both sides must be dry to the touch. That's how ALL contact cement works!
-
Try it and see what happens.
-
I use it all the time.
-
As do I. There is a difference between dry and tacky.
-
Tacky is just fine.

I took a load last week up to John Deere in Waterloo,... it was a hydraulic test rig and its electronic control unit. The Control unit itself was pretty strait forward and easy tarp. How ever,.. the 28k test unit on a frame was a nightmare. I used 4 furniture blankets folded in half, about 25 edge protectors bungee'd over every protruding object that I thought would tear my tarp and another 8 pieces of cut tires that I have been starting to collect. My wife and I tediously tarped that behemoth and with a smug grin I felt like it would be ok so long as I didnt go over 60.
Meh,.. whats that Murphy's law saying?
Man the wind was blowing me all over the place, I'm watching after about 2 hours my tarp is ballooning on the right side and I cant see past it anymore. Apparently the wind buffeting knocked half my edge protectors off and I now had about 8 - 10 holes and tears on the top where the corners of this machine were now protruding through. I wanted to pull my hair out. Tarp was ruined.
Got to Waterloo, its now raining like a sum botch,.. some private contractor was hired as the rigging crew to removed this thing. They never said a word about all the holes in my tarps,.. fortunately the 450 mi run paid enough to cover the loss of my tarp and then some.
So while I'm undoing the chains, my wife is on the ground with the tarp laid out (We got unloaded inside the building) and she's patching the holes with Gorilla tape, bless her heart. I love that woman. Surprisingly yes,.. it does work pretty well. Not as good as patching,.. but I'd say 98% of what she did is still there after 3 more tarp hauls. Sometimes out on the road you gotta do what you gotta do.

Anyone in The market for good tarps? I have a set of 3 mercer 6ft drop steel tarps, few patches, they are in my basement at home. And, my favorite, 3 piece, 8ft drop, lumber tarps, custom, from peakstarps. Vinyl top and fabric side. Black. They are in very good shape, no holes, no visible wear marks and kept in my storage box.
