I'm wanting to get my CDL, but have a DUI on my record that will be 2 years old. Can anyone tell me who might give me a chance or the best route to go?

No company that I know of will touch you with a 2 year old DUI.

Tessa, You have to lie on employment applications (or lie by omission) about this DUI. Then you need to plaster the streets with your applications and resumes and try to find a sloppy hiring manager who neglects to run or ask you for, your DMV print-out. Not sure, but applying with trucking companies outside of the state where you got your CDL might be a good possibility because it would take more effort for the hiring manager to get the report from a state other than his own. You're looking for weaknesses in company's systems that will let you slip-through-the-proverbial-cracks. And don't worry about the morality of omission. Deleted...

There's a thread right up top of experienced drivers advice regarding DUI and being a driver. Read it. Lying about your history is no good. Lying is lying.

i expect it's #### hard to get a driving job with a DUI.

Maybe things are different up here in Canada. When a driver applies for a job, he has to bring a print out, from the gov office, it costs him I think $7, it shows ALL inspections/convictions/warnings, and they also must bring a copy of drivers abstract .. which will show ALL activity against your record ... they both go back 5 years ...

In the US ... do they really just take a driver at his/her word about their previous mishaps?? Is there no official documentation for inspection/violation/citation history??

The DUI might come off of your record after 3 years, just depends on the state

You may want to wait another 5 to 8 years, so that your DUI will be at least 7 to 10 years old.
Some trucking companies will NOT consider you for a driving job regardless of how old your DUI is.

Just to be on the safe side, you may want to wait until your DUI is at LEAST 10 years old.
In the mean time, build up the absolute best MVR and employment record that you can possibly build up. Whatever you do, stay out of trouble with the law. By the time you are ready to to go for your CDL, you would then have 10 years of both a clean MVR and a clean employment history. Also, get as healthy and physically fit as possible withing the next 10 years, to be able to comply with both D.O.T. and trucking company standards.

You may want to consider totally giving up all alcoholic beverages altogether.

This way you will never have to worry about any more DUI's or DWI's "down the road". This advice may sound drastic, however, just as drugs and driving do NOT mix, alcohol and driving do NOT mix. This will be a lot of SELF DISCIPLINE on your part. It is the same SELF DISCIPLINE that other people must exercise to to stay away from drugs and other illegal substances.

Unfortunately, there are people who can show up legally drunk on just one can of beer or one glass of wine. Their bodies simply do NOT either absorb or metabolize alcohol in any shape, manner, or form whatsoever.

Good luck to you! You can do it!
