Also mark the rear Yoke in relation to the drive shaft so it goes back in phased and balanced. Also while you have it apart take the time to have flywheel resurfaced. And be sure a new throw out bearing and pilot bearing, also check your cross shaft bushings for wear much easier to replace them while trans is out.

I removed the tranny from my western star awhile back, I did it in my gravel driveway.
What I would suggest is lots of good blocks. I used a napa 3 1/2 ton floor jack with a tranny adapter for ontop that I made myself. I overmade it out of thick material, and added safety chains. For the ground I put down some 4x8 sheets of stainless steel and diamond plate (upside down) so I could roll the jack.
I took masking tape and a marker and marked all the lines, wires, etc. so I would remember quickly exactly where they went.
It was actually very easy, just much more heavy than the truck and car transmissions I am used to doing. Removal I just jacked the tranny up to the right level, slid it out. Install was a bit more of a pain, it took about 45?ish minutes or so of playing with it to get it back in. I never thought of the threaded rod, that is a great idea!.
Im a stay at home dad, and did much of this project in my driveway while my kid had her naps. When the baby monitor would start to talk, I would just wash up and leave it. It took me a few days. -
It it is a Volvo, 1999, You must lift engine and transmission so you can clear the tranny mounts. Then move tranny out of the way and keep engine supported on a jack. You will bust the exhaust flex tube/lines from turbo down so get replacement ready.
