I own a new trucking Company and I would like to go 100% owner operator. My question is do I need a MC# ? What type of insurance should I carry ?

First, you are not a Trucking Company. next, read thru the fmcsa website, they break it down
Cetane+ Thanks this. -
You must be a glutton for punishment...Being prepared for your bank account to hemorrhage money is the first step.
First things first.
Driver qualification file. Internet search for "Truck driver qualification file." Make certain it is 100% correct.
Pre employment drug screening and enrollment into a drug testing consortium. OOIDA has a full compliance package you can purchase to cover compliance issues. Quite honestly, the myriad of paperwork that has to be 100% correct or you lose, I recommend going through a 1-stop shop for all your authority and compliance needs. I see this as one of the biggest reasons new trucking companies fail. They miss the littlest thing and the New Entrant mandatory 30-90 day audit gets a fail and your DOT#, MCC authority gets revoked and you have to wait 30 days to reapply.
There are a whole host of places that will take care of it all. I chose www.truckersbookkeepingservice.com for EVERYTHING. Insurance, BOC-3, MCC & DOT #'s, KY #, NM permit, Oregon permit, NY HUT, IFTA setup, IRP, NV registration (home based state), UCR registration and their start up compliance package. All said and done, they got around $1,200 of my money minus the insurance, but I have the peace of mind in knowing everything I need is done correctly and that unless I have an anal cranial inversion between now and my DOT New Entrant Program audit, all my ducks are in a row and I will pass.Dino soar, barroll, knuckledragger and 1 other person Thank this. -

Check the OOIDA website; the answers to your questions are there.
BigCS Thanks this. -
I hope you knew the answer to those questions before going out to buy a truck....

Sounds good, why should I lease my truck to you?

I'm really not understanding what this guy is after. To want to start an o/o company and not knowing he needs an MC# kind of makes me think maybe he wants to run his own authority with his truck. But that's just a guess.Dino soar Thanks this.

Doesn't say "start" says "owns". as in already has but doesn't know if he needs MC number?
-
You need an mc#, dot# boc-3 and to file a highway heavy tax depending on how many trucks you have.
I opened my company just over 6 months now. I used Ivan from Turnkey authority..he was great and handled e everything.
Keep in mind that it could take up to 21 days to become active authority. If you pay your cargo insurance immediately and it shows on file, that will definitely expedite the process!
Let me know if you have anymore questions, I would be happy to help!
