Yup. That's the case with me hauling steel beams from OH/PA to NC/SC then back again. The steel from SC is high heat and high strength used for bridge building and prefab home frames. The steel from OH/PA is used in building construction and not as strong since it's used vertically most of the time. This was explained to my by the asst plant manager at Nucor.
Blows my mind.

that's the beauty of the free market ! What is even more amazing to me is to realize sometimes you see two trucks with the exact same load on from and to the same place and one truck is being paid $1.50/mile and the other is $6/mile. And that happens way more than most people realize as well.
I would think cross country rebar would be a bit of an exception though. Maybe somebody screwed up and sent it to the wrong port. What's a truckload of rebar worth retail anyway ? $15k ? -
I was told something similar; something to do with inventory and taxes. I didn't care, it was easy money not having to actually deal with grocery warehouse receiving clerks and their ilk. Just reseal the load and keep it on the road.truck_dwival Thanks this.

Haven't you guys ever watched television? They are hiding narcotics in that re-bar!

California trucks a lot of their produce to Reno, NV then back into California. Has something to do with import/export across state lines and is much cheaper.

Very insightful. The 'certs' are very important.

Fixed that for ya.
fortycalglock and old time Thank this. -
Shipping it to the coast is likely the most expensive part. Shipping it overseas would be the cheapest. Think about it. They are putting it on an incredibly large boat with a crap load of other containers. Shipping company doesn't need to charge a whole lot to cover overhead and make profit. Think of it like shipping a package, where if you do standard shipping you don't have to pay an arm and a leg unless you want it there faster.
And then they only have to pay like .25 an hour to foreign workers who are all pretty much slaves. Yeah, anything you get from China was made by a slave.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Wow. Well I hope both my wifes diamond rings were both conflict one. Because I earned it. So should they.
