Your statement "I just wanted to give him a chance" stands out in my mind. It sounds like he wasn't great material, but you wanted to give him a chance. OK, that's fine but you need to do a run with him before cutting him loose. His screw-ups would have been obvious if you had done so. (and you wouldn't have hired him).

He started out great, I cannot be with a driver 100% of the time, as drivers we need to be able to handle situations on our own even if you do not own the truck.
I would say give a person a chance, either way, its a figure of speech.
Yes when trying to select a good candidate I am always weighing out the pro's and con's of everyone that I speak with. He had 15 years experience and no tickets, one minor accident about 2 years ago. I did run with him but please keep in mind that everyone is on their best behavior when the boss is around. -
He won't be the only one(if you keep doing this). After awhile you'll learn to go with that first initial reaction. As long as that's right more often than wrong you're fine. If you only hear what you want to then you're no different than a driver that only hears what he wants. And it won't work out.
281ric Thanks this. -
Not sure what you are trying to say here... I did something wrong by hiring him?
-
No, just like everything else there is a learning curve. Sometimes you will hire someone for the wrong reason. Don't listen to what they say, pay attention to what they don't say. Never had someone tell me the bad things about themselves, just what they think I want to hear.
Don't worry about it, don't take it personal. Happens to everyone. Down the road you'll laugh about it.maffy95 Thanks this. -
your fuse will get shorter as you hire people. The more people you hire and don't work out, the quicker you'll be able to sort them. I don't consider someone "hired" until they've been with me for a couple weeks. Doing all the paperwork to can someone a few days later is a bummer but hey, better you get rid of them before someone gets killed or whatever.

you said he had experience with a mega carrier. that is code for "cant think for themselves". but not their fault they are trained and brainwashed to be that way.
ramblingman, maffy95 and 123456 Thank this. -
I feel exactly the same way.
They micromanage their drivers to the extent that I wouldnt be surprised if they told them when they can go to the bathroom. I think the mega's ruin drivers that have potential. These drivers have no understanding of how free it is to work for an o/o or very small company.
I was told that megas like to put 2 inexperienced people together so they can learn from each others mistakes. Not sure how true that is' but if so thats the dumbest thing anyone could do. Might as well put 2 monkeys behind the wheel.

It can be a PITA but sometimes it's better to have to "re-train" than one that thinks they know everything. A real PITA can be an ex O/O that all you will hear is "that isn't how i did it". Of course they no longer have a truck.
double yellow and dannythetrucker Thank this. -
I got an idea, pay the driver sixteen hundred a week. open an escrow account that your driver deposits five or ten grand incase of damages to be returned in six months. That's a deal I would take.
