I have read about a program in the past that ABF sponsors, to develop new drivers, but not sure if it is still in place.
Anyone have any ideas on this???? -
I could be wrong but from what I understand they will send you to Little Rock, Arkansas for a couple of weeks of CDL school/training and then send you back to your home state to get your CDL... Once that is done you will work the dock and do road training until so many hours are accuired and then you will finally get put on as a full time driver...

Thanks for the reply! I applied both to the road driver and city school (prob work differently). If anyone has any first hand experience/knowledge...please share it!!

I don't know about Abf but when I worked for fedex freight they had a driver apprenticeship program. Basically you were a dock worker who was paid as a driver while they trained you in the yard to get your cdl-a. Good luck.. But for real information just call Abf...
semi retired semi driver Thanks this. -
Calling ABF would be too easy LOL
FEDEX Freight...you were already an employee right...you didn't just apply off the street did you?
-
Yes fedex I was already a driver but I saw some dock workers make the transition from the docks to the trucks. Yeah but I'm the same way about calling companies too. Lol
Sean_Reno Thanks this. -
The ABF School, apparently hires drivers off the street and sends them to CDL School, etc and then they work as a driver (maybe w/some dock duties)...ie one doesn't need to first get hired as a dock worker and then apply to be a driver.
How was FEDEX? Did you get hired off the street as a driver (delivery or)?
Thanks! -
Yes I was hired off the street as a driver and Fedex was actually the best Freight company that I have worked for. Great benefits and you receive discounts on alot of things even up to buying cars. FedEx hires for a driver apprentice but I think that's because they have to advertise for the position . But most of the time the dock workers have already shown interest in the position. But then again that's why they get hired first because they already work for the company. With fedec you also have many opportunities for advancement. The guy who taught my orientation class was a dock worker at first. I left fedex to start pulling tankers but it's still one of the best companies I've worked for.

Yeah, FEDEX and UPS would be my top two pics. I wouldn't mind moving to a major hub for the shot!RJ33RD Thanks this.
