Right size tarps...

I've actually seen a couple trucks set up like that. Not sure I'd take it to that extreme. Though with the right motivation ($$$) I may like to try that.

Realistically, unless I found a truck for a decent price already set up, I doubt I would actually make the modifications myself.

But yeah man. I right there with you. If I have space and can still scale it legally,.. I'm all about calling and asking what kind of partials these guys have going in my direction. Many times they dont even list them. They save them for the Hot Shot guys they have on back up.

Why go down the road at $2.50 - $3 mi when you can get $5 for most of the route? And often still be under 70k Thats where I'm at right now. I havent perfected my methods yet. Maybe never will. But I'm trying.

I was up in Wi picking up an Army load going to Vegas. Was talking with another step deck guy and he said he makes his money doing over size/over weight loads. Permitting 90k most of the time. My trailer is rated 80k like his. He said he pulls a lot of John Deer loads at 55-58k lbs. Claims he gets $6 - $8mi most of the time.

I started liking the idea of getting $6 mi, but then I thought about all that weight and the stress it would put on my truck. Eating up my tires, brakes/drums, air bags etc. I think I like $3-$4mi with cheaper operating costs rather than $6 that would probably cut my NET down exponentially. My truck is old and tired. I dont think its up for pulling heavy loads like that,.. plus how long would my trailer last doing those kinds of loads? What do you think?

My trailer is rated at 80,000lbs as well, but I've seen too many trailers snapped in half under legal loads to really want to push it. I live in Michigan, so I'm ankle deep in 50k-120k freight, but with a 15 year old trailer, and rates for that heavy stuff less than 30% more than what I'm registered for, I'll just keep putting along at $3-$4/mi and leave the big money for the day I've got 6 BOLs in my clip board and about 55k on my gauges.
