scania had CAG automated transmission 2years before (1983) , but mercedes did difference when offer it as serial equipment in 1988.
owner of truck did not like EPS , i still can remember his swears toward EPS when it end up in neutral when he try to shift it too fast, back than we had bad roads lot of hills are not flatten , also many people were afraid of herborn case

i like it not because of truck itself, but whole package , truck+body+trailer+color , i love those truck+full drawbar trailer combinations , they remind me on better times, more money, less police, better drivers, more lamb, now everyone complain about those setups as they are not able to drive them.

i especially like those grain tipper bodyworks even more because this is kumlin fahrzeugbau, now we buy rear tipper polish cheap trailers

but truck really looks great, back than 385 tires without rings , no external reinforcement profiles on sideboards , modern tipper arms with sphere, build very low , it was much ahead of its time

but it looks like it is spring suspension on rear axle, i dont think anyone would left air in high position , strange- somebody opt for so much new things like eps and hydraulic drawbar but avoid air suspension

it was always spotless, clean both out and inside, but latter trailer started to get some rust on posts, it was always with tarpaulin except when drive chickens , i remember how much time did he spend to open and close trap and remove construction for trap when loading gravel and similar loads but he did not want to remove it

in my opinion best looking truck ever, only miss spoiler below bumper and i am not particularly fan of those 310L round tanks
maybe was too long, that long trailer is not for overloads, and it is heavy itself. and our roads were narrow than, on first trip he broke mirror, he could load 30t of sawdust our trucks could load 25-26t

We had truck with split rims on drives and 22.5 on steer axle. Later we switched to 22.5 on all axles

here i dont remember any truck with ring and split rims in last 20years , but some trailers were left on them until early 2000s , my father even used to replace 385 with 365 tires because they carry more weight

I concider split rims too dangerouse.

There are many made in USSR ZIL and GAZ trucks on 20'' split rims. Truckers swap them with 19,5' and 22.5 rims. They say many truckers and mechanics got serious injury with these rims

I am planing to do so after my new set of tires get worn..but I question how many part should I change , and if it's worth the investment !

    after edit:

would this demountable rim replace the split rim? Without modifying other stuff?

When you guys talk about a split rim do you mean the older tube type with lock rings , snap rings etc?
    OR
The ones like the old Fiat trucks and some 2nd world war ones where the whole rim is in pieces?

They are talking the one piece rim with locking ring not the 3 piece like they still use in Australia.
