Boss is looking into a 55 ton float with a cheater neck. Pros vs cons. Myself I've never used one. Only advantage I can see is it will change center point of trailer, putting more weight on 5th wheel. Advice appreciate. Thanks
Cheater neck.

Moves weight between the truck and trailer, depending on which way you move the pin.
Nice to be able to move the weight, without having to move the machine.
Martin -
Yea, but after awhile the pin holes get a little slop in them..
So you will feel the mini surge. And I bet the trailer brand is XL.. good luck... YMMV -
Not sure of brand he is looking at. Is XL not a good trailer. Is there other manufactures that make a cheater necks. Is one better then another.
-
I spoke to one of our guys that has had a XL since new in 2006. He never had a problem with it, although he is the only one that pulled it too.... So I dunno
Martin -
Dispatcher asked how I'd like to pull it dedicated. So my assumption is it will only be behind my truck or parked. Since I'm the only one with experience in heavy haul.
-
Martin, you are right.
The Xl trls. I have pulled were fleet trls.
So everybody and their uncle's uncles pulled them. -
I like their 18" ride height on the 45ton trailers, and a few other small things they have going for them.
I emailed XL sales a few weeks back, and never heard from them. Guess they dont want to sell me a trailer....Oh well
I also like the ride height on the Fontaines, but have never pulled one I dont think

I currently pull a 55ton Fontaine with flip box and single axle stinger. Aside from screwing around when we first got it, I don't remember ever hauling anything with the pin upfront in the box. The goose is long enough to where I usually run with the king pin centered over my front drive (also have a drop axle) and am good there with the stinger up to 160k. All in all, very happy with the way she rides....

I will be a 6 axle like I am now pulling a company TK90. SO no need for anything bigger than a 80k really, but resale wouldn't be worth anything when the time comes.
So I need a longer well, to get stuff further back onto the triple, than a 4 axle truck. To get @28-29' in the well, and have a 53' trailer, it needs to be a flip neck. Permitted isn't a problem with a 56-57' trailer, but it would be an issue when empty or light.
My current setup and load, you can see the neck down and the machine back, to get under 40k on the drives
