only 1 time I called police dept. I went to FL first time. got within 2 blocks of delivery address, sign say's no trucks. not sure about the law in FL. so I got the non emergency police num for the town I was in. told them my situation, the officer on the phone say's if you got a delivery to make on that road, then you go. I asked fore his name wrote it down, & went on the road, unloaded & left. I sure wanted to make sure my load pay did not go for a fine.

Reminds me of us steel, seen so many trucks try to squeeze under that 12'7. Luckily our trucks are mid roofs and fit fine.

I wont fit,.. I have to take the scenic route through the rail yard and then negotiate what seems like 20 miles of some post apocalyptic nuclear city to get to where they want to unload me.

Unless its in a town in PA, Chicago, Gary, Jersey, NYC etc,.. no.

I dont blindly follow my GPS either. I always look on my atlas or google maps for the main route,.. and then google satellite/street view for the delivery area. Though I admit,.. mainly to make sure I have somewhere to park.

My GPS is pretty good about not routing me under the heights I give it. Its also very good about not routing me on non truck routes as well. But it can only go by whats in the national data base. So far so good.

elizabeth NJ... to a grocery store in the city center.... town is laid out like a wagon wheel... with one way streets..Come down the exit, make the dogleg over to the street I need, come to the major intersection, and my road in is closed... digging the street up.... I turn left onto the 4 lane road that goes in a circle around, hoping to find another way in... GPS has identified a street in...Get to red light, look down the street and I can see a low brick bridge, nope not turning right... Now I know the next street is no way in for a 13'4" refer, so on around I go... see a major street in, and I recognize the street name as running behind the store I am headed to... make the right turn, and then I see the bridge... marked 12'6"... drive towards the bridge, and can tell it is a true 12'6", I can see where it has been hit before, so now I need to get turned around, narrow side streets.... I am in the right lane of a 4 lane, so I put on my flashers....

Need some help getting out of this mess, and need to clear my head... getting ready to dial 411 to get to the police, when an officer pulls up. He asked why I was blocking traffic, and I explained to him where I needed to go, and that I was not going to hit that bridge... he chuckled, and said, hang tight, him and another officer blocked the intersection so I could do a controlled U turn out... but I asked him before I do that how am I going to get to the grocery store...

another chuckle, and he said after I get turned around he will get in front of me, and we will go back to where I started, and go in the wrong way on the one way street that is open... his partner will block the street... only a 3 block trip...

no tickets, no damage, just two officers who helped out a truck driver... and the one thanked me for not hitting anything.

Sounds like Gary/Hammond IN. Was only there in a van with some urgent pump or parts for engineering, but what a scene, like some dark brown/grey moonscape. They have those giant overhead slab haulers rumbling around ready to squash you like a bug.
