just had a few questions these engines I noticed are not red top engines whats the difference between these and the redtop engines? I heard something about the earlier black engines having a better piston then the newer n14's? is this true?
do these engines have any known issues or are they just like the newer redtops which have tendencies to crap out on injectors?
any input would be great
93 or so n14 celect black motor questions?

red tops indicated high hp witch started at i think 425hp if i remember right
-
I always thought that the Redtop ones were Electronic control (celect/celectplus)
And the black top ones were Mechanical control(with the STC injectors)
BISTBC.. -
Biggest issue I can think of is the bushing in the front cover for the acc drive.Change every 250k. If it fails it spins and ruins the front cover. Cheap part if changed in time.

I'm not sure but I believe I heard something about black tops being lower horsepower fleet specs with something like a 1800rpm limit but I may be wrong it's been 15 years since I asked that question

I had a 92 black n14, it was rated at 330 hp, but had it turned up to 435, it was electronic

I have seen electronic and manual n14 with black valve covers. Most of the elctronics are Celect engines. I have seen several 460hp from factory. All the red tops I have seen are Celect plus I have seen them from 365 to 525. The ecm pins are configured different from the Celect and Celect plus

wtf is all this political crap in my thread guys???
wore out Thanks this. -
Sorry things went sideways at post 8. Any N14 was a great engine. The Red Tops were like a higher performance engines. Keep the fuel cool and clean , and change the bushing for the acc drive in the front cover before 250k miles. Had to change more then a few front covers because of that. A cheap part the can do expensive damage when it goes bad. Will return great fuel mileage when geared right. Really miss them! A close second choice to the Detroit series 60( pre egr).
