For a new driver just out of a community college school; I found a local company were I can be home each night driving 18 wheelers and they hire new drivers. I've also been told they have good benefits and it's a long established company. Any idea what the minimum pay per mile I should expect from them?

I guess I would ask them that question! Local drivers make deceptively high cpm, might be 40 or 50 cents. But then again, local companies usually pay by the hour, load or day. Call them and ask!

If I'm forced to give a number, I'd say 32 CPM having no experience but there is a lot I don't know about the job and your abilities and what you can offer this potential new employer, as well as what they will demand of you.

But the mileage component may be minor. 50 cents a mile isn't great if you only run 1,200 miles/week, so there could a number of other pay components to consider and the potential weekly gross may be the bigger consideration. As with most jobs, what you get out of it in terms of pay is dependent on what you can/will put into the job. But don't become a slave to them.

I guess what I'm asking is what do new OTR drivers make as cpm? As a comparison to my situation. Also, I'm told OTR drivers figure they travel about 50 miles per hour of a driving day considering stop lights, rest stops, etc.

$0.26 to $0.35 -- again, you have to call potential employers, they are all different.

I think he may have a potential job opening at some local outfit and he wants to know if he's getting shafted or not with whatever they offer. But when the OP says "local company, home nightly" that makes this not your typical driver entry job so I'm not sure if the normal pay rates you see for new drivers as found in driver ad books would apply here.

  8. One thing I have learned getting into this field was very well illustrated by an instructor at school. CPM is not singularly a good judge of pay but one of many many variables to consider . I could pay you $1.00 cpm, guy b .30 cpm and guy c .45 cpm.

Now guy b is rolling 3000 miles a week ($1000/wk), guy C is running 1700 ($765/wk), and you your getting 200 miles a week. ($200/wk)

The local gigs that I'm seeing generally pay by the hour. From what I'm seeing...that tends to range from $19-25/hr, for a new driver. $19/hr being the going rate...$25/hr being more for the graveyard shift.

I am considered a "local" driver because I am the only company driver who was hired to run local stuff around town but also run typically 300 miles radius. The company ships probably 10 loads of material a day by common carrier. I haul the stuff they dont want. They haul all the long stuff around the lower 48.
I am considered local & home regularly as in 4, 5 or 6 nights a week. I will be home 5 nights this week. I am pulling 53 ft dry vans, no touch freight. Sometimes like last Friday, I may only work 3 or 4 hrs per day. However, sometimes I may work up to 14 hrs per day (but seldom), if I am trying to make two separate deliveries in one day. Tomorrow, I will only work about 6 hrs. Tuesday about 9 or so.

I am paid $150 per day or mileage @.36 per mile, which ever is more. I have about 30 years driving commercial vehicles but not "truly OTR" experience. Since I am home most night & have what I consider to be a "Tater" job, I'm ok with my pay. I run out of north Louisiana usually about 300 mile radius.
