I have my own business and have a DOT number, med card, commercial insurance, do log books, etc because we are over 10k and in interstate commerce. Right now I have several pickups with trailers to move our equipment from job to job.

I am thinking of buy a big truck with a step deck to haul everything instead of needing three pickups and drivers. I will not be hauling anything for anyone else.

Aside froma CDL what else am I going to need?

What is the best way to go about getting a CDL ? I work 7 days a week managing my business and employees so taking off for some type of school doesn't seem feasible.

well that all depends on what state ur in and what other states ur gonna 2 work in, where im at u don't need a cdl if on a farm or own ur on own truck and only use it for hauling ur trailer if it is used 4 storage, but on side of truck u have 2 have not 4 hire and and personal use on side of it, u don't have 2 go 2 trucking school 2 get a cdl, but is better if u don't anything about them if anything u'll come out book smart from 1, if u dont go 2 a school u need book then take written test and then ur gonna need a truck and trailer 4 test and will have 2 pass a pre inpestion b4 u can even drive it 4 ur test

In TX and AZ that I know of, you can rent truck and trailer for about $275 through some local 3rd party schools/test sites to do the tests. Look at craigslist or google all that to find em. But you need to be able to do the pretrip, skills and road tests of course.

I am in Texas and this is non farm and is for commerecial purposes. Not hauling other people's stuff but hauling my own equipment in the course of our business. We primarily travel to surrounding states NM, OK, KS, CO etc

I think as you're hauling your own stuff, you won't need a Motor Carrier number. You have everything else I guess.

This was brought up on another site, it depends on what you mean by your own stuff?

If you mean that you are taking equipement to a site to setup and work, then you need to call each of those states that you are going to and ask them.

If you mean that this is stuff you made and sold to customer's in other states, then you may be a carrier, because the property isn't yours once it is sold, so you may been to be a carrier.

Not hauling anything that we sell. Hauling our own equipment that we use to do our work. Skid steers, ATV's, tractors, stuff like that.

Then obtaining insurance for your rig probably isn't feasible, either. Do you have a maintenance facility and a qualified mechanic on staff? http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/396.19

Do you feel prepared to dive into the ocean of trucking regulations? As deep and wide as it is, people still hit their heads on the bottom.

We have commercial insurance as all our pickups/goosenecks are DOT regulated. We have our own maintenance facility and mechanic. We have had our DOT number for 6 years and been audited with no problems. Just never gone into the world of over 26k.

I have time to do some things but definitely not time to go to some type of truck driver class. We are so busy with work right now we can barely keep up.
