I found a couple pieces of chrome looking metal on oil plug. shop thought it looked like it was off cam based on look, color e.t.c. engine is a 95 ser 60 11.1 det. shop say's has to special order cam.part is coming from OH. & is 3 times more because this cam is no longer made. usually $400.00 but mine is going to cost right at $1200.00 was not aware of 11.1 det part availability.

I would be calling Detroit, or the local Detroit representative. There are thousands of those motors out there and it sounds to me like someone is playing you.

First issue though is ordering a cam without pulling the valve cover to check it. No telling what the shavings are from until you look. Chrome looking pieces are more likely a rocker roller flaking IMO, which could hurt the cam, but not always if caught early enough.

I think you are getting hosed, reman cams are still available. 1st link on a google search:

I wouldn't sign off on ordering a cam until you have the motor opened up to verify that's what is actually in need of replacement.

I am not sure, but think the timing marks & cam ARE different.

the shop is a reputable shop. they are honest folks, but could make a bad choice. when I drop truck off, I let the experts take care of it. if I tell them what to do or give them the parts & something happens, they can say , well this is your part you brought us, so it is not our responsibility if something fails. I have had other major work done & could of saved money bringing in my own parts, but one time I had a failure, it was all shop supplied parts. they ate the parts & labor to redo. not sure that would be the case if they had used my parts.
