I would be calling Detroit, or the local Detroit representative. There are thousands of those motors out there and it sounds to me like someone is playing you.
-
sounds more like their playing the guessing game and gonna take u 4 a money spending spree, their's n way 2 tell where those metal shaveings are from till a tear down on engine is done, 4 all u could know they could b from wrist pin getting rdy 2 come apart

First issue though is ordering a cam without pulling the valve cover to check it. No telling what the shavings are from until you look. Chrome looking pieces are more likely a rocker roller flaking IMO, which could hurt the cam, but not always if caught early enough.
I think you are getting hosed, reman cams are still available. 1st link on a google search:

I wouldn't sign off on ordering a cam until you have the motor opened up to verify that's what is actually in need of replacement.

I looked at the diesel specialist but after the fact. the part was already ordered.

I am not sure, but think the timing marks & cam ARE different.

the shop is a reputable shop. they are honest folks, but could make a bad choice. when I drop truck off, I let the experts take care of it. if I tell them what to do or give them the parts & something happens, they can say , well this is your part you brought us, so it is not our responsibility if something fails. I have had other major work done & could of saved money bringing in my own parts, but one time I had a failure, it was all shop supplied parts. they ate the parts & labor to redo. not sure that would be the case if they had used my parts.

they did open up, said is was the cam.Ruthless Thanks this.
