I received that same letter from them regarding my insurance. I think it pushed it back a week or so more than what I was anticipating until the time I got the actual certificate.

We will see what next week brings. I really would have liked to have been working before October was over rather then mid November. My worry is that just when I get started everything comes to a grinding halt because of Thanksgiving then get a rhythm going again and stop for Christmas and New Years.... I never thought Id complain about too many holidays but as a new O/O...There are too many holidays in the near future!!
The plan was for me to head north with the family for Christmas but now Im pushing up against too much down time for a new operation so while I planned to stay mostly regional Ill most likely use this vacation time as an opportunity to take a load north and meet the family there then have a few days off and look for a load back south. At least I can use some of that time to generate some revenue. And it will be a chance to take a longer run and see how it goes. -
You'll find holidays can go either way. Thanksgiving is sort of unique in that it always falls on a Thursday and many shippers, although closed on the holiday, will be open Friday, possibly Saturday. Also shippers will be loading end of week for Monday deliveries. It's also the starting gun for holiday consumers. If the product you haul is any kind of retail item, you'll be busy from now till the end of January.
More often than not, you will find last minute orders that will pay premium $$$$ to move. Although, it's nothing to count on. For now, just make sure you post your truck on whatever loadboard you're using. As you get farther along and develop some relationships, you'll simply put the word out and they will call. Being that guy who will go out and start the truck any day when available and needed can be profitable at times. Of course, like any other day, you have to ask for it.crackinwise and double yellow Thank this. -
Yep, you're thinking in the right direction. As soon as Thanksgiving is in the rear view mirror people are thinking about Christmas. All the money is directed towards Christmas. The freight is all about Christmas. Add the normal winter time slowdown in construction and it gets pretty scarce.
Back in the day when I was flat bedding, I usually figured on being slow from Thanksgiving until sometime after the first of the year. Sometimes that would be at least the middle of January and maybe longer. I used that time to catch up on maintenance stuff, hunting and just generally taking time off. In your case all that stuff is already done and you need to be moving but, unfortunately, flat bedding depends on construction of some sort and it's always slower in the winter months.
As you now know, it's a long tedious process getting all this stuff in place. And you haven't even got to the good part yet. Without steady freight that's actually profitable, all the rest is worthless. That's how you get the phd in trucking. And guess what, the government doesn't care if you're making money or not, the paperwork still must be done.
Good luck to you. I've been following the thread from the beginning and having been there and done that I can see the challenges ahead. Your recent education is the reason that I usually discourage people with little trucking experience from jumping in with both feet. For most, it's better to lease to someone for a while because they don't have a clue about these things and it can be overwhelming.crackinwise and tsavory Thank this. -
The End Is The Beginning
November 10th 2014 is a day that could be considered the end..... Or the beginning. Its kind of like teh word "aloha". It means both hello and goodbye... My point is that on November 10th, after probably hundreds of refreshes on the FMCSA Safer site, there it was in bold letters....ACTIVE.
At about 10 am my authority officially went active. I spent yesterday getting everything in place to haul my first load. Finishing touches on the truck and repairs completed to the tune of $1400.00 I took the truck and trailer and had it weighed full of fuel and equipment. This was my maiden journey with my complete setup and it went well. Truck runs smooth, at least for now, and all the gauges worked. Im sure there is some piece of equipment or some small detail I may have forgotten but I dont think there is anything else in the way of hauling load number 1 very soon.
Tomorrow I have an appointment to put the lettering and numbers on the truck. And the trailer registration will be complete...what I mean is I go from paper temp tag to actual Florida permanant tag. Today was spent filling out carrier packets for brokers. I filled out 8 and have 5 confirmed that I am go to go and book a load.
So this is the end of the road less traveled in terms of my journey to getting my authority but just the begining of a brand new transportation company. Im not sure what my plan is for this thread but my thought would be to keep it active with updates on how things are going now that I have active authority. Im sure Ill be busy at first trying to generate some cash flow and start paying all the expenses Ive been racking up but Ill be back when I can for updates if anyone is interested.
Some final numbers:
$1486 in maintenance and repairs for tractor and DOT Inspections for truck and trailer
$596 Registration and sales tax on trailer
$745 First fuel up (full tanks)
$130 Lettering and numbers for truck
$12 Scale fees (first weigh trailer only because Florida needs it for the title second weigh truck trailer full tanks empty weight)
$200 Mattress for sleeper
$150 Misc items for travelRedForeman, ramblingman, Al. Roper and 4 others Thank this. -
Well congrats may your road be smooth and paved from here on out just watch for a few potholes here and there

Good luck in your new adventures. Here's wishing you the best!!
Looking forward to hearing how things are going for you in the future.crackinwise Thanks this. -
I've kept up with this, seeing as how we are both going about this at the same time. I knew all along I would not get on the road until this week due to loan funding. My insurance went active along with my authority a week and a half ago. I swear, I thought I was going to get on the road before you. Congratulations and best wishes in your endeavor.
tsavory Thanks this.
