[h=2]Back up lights on cab[/h]
Can you get a ticket if the lights on the back of the cab that you use to see when hooking up don't work?
most of the ones i have dealt with are 1156 bulbs and are easily changed out. If not the 1156,they are the sealed bulb ones which are easily swapped as well.

You are being rude because you don't know if it's just a light bulb or if there is something in the switch. As for shutting down under a load, he has to go through the terminal and the inspection line today, he has a load that he is taking to another terminal in Dallas to be relayed because the customer decided they don't want it until next Tuesday, so I was just trying to get some information to help him out with this.

WRONG! (but a common mistake among those who just don't know any better, so don't feel bad.)
You can ONLY be cited for a violation if you are not in compliance with a regulation or law. Which regulation would you be cited for if your work light (or any other auxiliary light NOT required by the regulations) did not work?
Now as far as the OP is concerned, if the BACKUP lights (as indicated by the title of the thread) were not functional, that would be a violation of §393.11:
HOWEVER, if the lights in question are in fact the work lights up on the back of the cab to illuminate the catwalk area while hooking to a trailer as was described in the text of the OP, then no violation exists because those work lights are not required by the regulations.Grumppy, j_martell, semi retired semi driver and 4 others Thank this. -
...and any driver who received such a ticket could have walked into court with their little green book with 393.9(a) highlighted along with 393.11 which lays out which lights are required. As long as all of the REQUIRED lights work, it doesn't matter how many auxiliary lights are burned out...no violation exists. The regulations are quite clear on the matter, and any officer who wrote a citation for a burned out auxiliary light could be made to look like an incompetent boob in front of the judge.

Wonder if it could be a state deal. I know the two I mentioned happened in mo.

OK, I learned something today, and I thank old what's her name (musicgal)
for that! For those that want to look for themselves, it is here. Legal Information Institute at Cornell University Law School. (But what do they know, anyway?)
And we are back to the same old thing. Do you take the time to go to court over it? All things considered? Do you pay a shyster several hundred bucks to go for you? -
Yeah those 2 lamps being referred to DO NOT need to be operable, just as an inside cab lite or sleeper lite doesn't need to be. I don't know how I know this, but I do ! This brings up an additional subject RE: driver knowledge. It is to every driver's benefit to know all the rules and regulations in the trucking industry. This is so people who have "authority" to shut you down, won't by mistake. An example could be a shop mechanic telling you something isn't legal. When in reality, it is. Even Police agencies make mistakes and issue citations wrongly. A bossman I worked for argued that I had to show sleeper berth when taking my 10 off every night. I proved him wrong.

Wether or not the man meant to be rude, doesn't matter if the man can't put a #### bulb in the light to see if that fixes it then he needs a new job!
bobbyhill Thanks this. -
You should not need the light on to couple your trailer. If you can't see hoses and pigtail and where to put them buy a flashlight. After delivering load replace your bulbs yourself
