:biggrin_25513: im out here sitting on the nw coast spending some down time with my Family sitting here watching The news live on TV a rairity for me I see the Weather has turned to Crap across the 7/8ths of the US I see two accidents being reported on in one case a police officer very nearly misses gitting wiped out by a 18 wheeler losing control on a icy hwy. obviousley the driver was not paying Attention to the road conditions and completely obliviousl to the fact that the road is freezing up The Police car was totally off the side of the road with his bubble lights going. the Officer had to bail over the guard rail to avoid getting hit. come on lets pay attention to whats happening I use a outdoor temp guage mounted right behind the mirror strut it has a alarm that I have set for 35 degrees that gives me a 3 degree advance warning. Bridges overpasses and low lying areas are suspectable to freezing before the rest of the road. I am always looking 1/2 mile or more ahead of were I am at looking at what the traffic is doing if I see any car or truck on the side of the road I will always move over to the left lane and give them extra room if I can. one of my ex CoDrivers accidently ran over another drivers leg because he was under the truck with his leg sticking out into traffic. made his life misarrable for awhile.

The other accident just baffles my mind and make me Quistion the mentality of the drivers out there how in the hell do you follow GPS directins on to a pedestrian bridge to a lighthouse in a park and get the truck stuck on a Island. didn't thay teach you how to read and interpit a map and figure a safe route too your distination. yes truckers atlases take up space in the cab and individual street maps tend to fill up the glovebox and the map pockits in the doors but maps are made for a reason. you need to spend more attion to what is in front of your windshield and bumber than to be following the arrow on the dashboard. no wonder the younger generation is going to #### to much time playing video games and not using you minds. I highly doupt if I asked a new driver what a map and compuss looks like. yes I have a dash mount compuss out of a old piper cub. it works great. that about all I got for my rant. gonna get me some sleep gonna take out some tall fir trees tomorrow im going 150 feet away from the house and taking out all the tall trees I was wathching them today in the 60 mph winds I don't want any trees into the house ill replant with 6 footers. could use the fire wood any ways. please pardon the spelling I forgot to run the spellcheck before I reviewed it and I don't want to have to retype everything

i'm just guessing, but i bet them 2 bridges aren't shown on the atlas. nor that park.

but yeah, that baffles me too. specially since them bridges were closed 50 years ago.

that's just one more proof, that most drivers have no brains.

now watch the argument pop up. give me atlas, gps shouldn't be used, YEAH. OK.

There are some pictures of the PTL truck in the park and almost on the bridge on www.cdllife.com. (Sorry but I don't know how to insert the link on my phone. )

Virtual absence of traffic enforcement. If people drove anything like they do today back in the '60s when enforcement was ubiquitous, they couldn't keep a license for a month.

It is estimated by some sources that 75% of what remains of law enforcement, thanks to budget slashing, the rapidly decreasing citizen tax base, and rapidly expanding corporate welfare, are now focused on the War On Drugs, because police departments get to keep or sell the assets of accused users/dealers, and the "civil forfeitures" of those merely accused of the non-crime of possessing American currency. Where does it all go? To the War On Drugs, of course!

Reading the threads of some of the mega fleets is scary. There is an absolute lack of common sense when it comes to trip planning. They follow the GPS like it is God, following directions down dirt roads, Uturns on freeways, residential dead ends. One driver actually ran out of fuel because the GPS didn't tell him he needed it. There is nothing wrong with technology as a whole, it does make our jobs easier but it is the human element that screws it up. You can't fix stupid.

The ignorance on display daily in this business is disgusting. I used to think drivers didn't care...now I have realized they are just ignorant. Nothing more dangerous than a stupid person.

:biggrin_25524:I will admit that starting out 20 years ago I made some dumb mistakes but I learned from them. I lived 1/4 mile down on the end of a small city street there was enough room to park my tractor in the cul de sac and I could freely turn around and head back out if needed but one night after being on the road for 3 weeks straight I for got to leave the trailer a 53 footer at SEATAC at the company lot procedded to drive down my street git down to the end and I cant turn around there was not enough space had to back all the way back out and dump the trailer at safeway on the back lot. plus I ended up taking out my cable tv.
