Those days are gone! Build quality is almost the same on all these trucks! Reliability should be the foundation of truck searching.

Any opinions on motor/trans/axle? Estimated maximum weight we will be carrying on a 48-51 foot trailer is 38,000lbs

If you're buying new (2010+ emissions trucks) if stay away from anything powered by a PACCAR mx13 or Detroit dd13. We have those in our trucks and they are in the shop all the time. The Cummins ISX powered truck we have is the only reliable one on the yard.

    I'd recommend anything pre-2003

Depends on what one is looking for in an overall package. Each OEM has some unique things that can be done in spec'ing out a truck that the other's don't. You have to analyze what all you want in a truck, and then narrow in on who will put a truck together with all you want, then compare. Just brand comparison doesn't cut it.

For example, and just an example for this discussion. International has an exclusive with Allison for the new TC-10 automatic transmission. If one was looking for that, then International is your only stop. If you are sold on the DT12, the Freightliner/Western Star is you only choice. You want a Detroit engine, same thing. There is a long, long list of similar type of things going on. It all depends on what you want in a truck. Then you have to go to the OEM's that do that. Axles, suspensions, cab/sleeper layout, etc. Every OEM offers something different than the others. It is a package kind of thing. Not like going down and comparing a Ford F-150, a Ram 1500, and a Chevy 1500. That is pretty limited. With a semi truck, you get to tweak things clear down to the brand of wheel seals to make it specifically fit you and what you are trying to do. You just can't reasonably compare trucks across brands when you do that.

I've rebuilt a lot more Cummins engines than Paccar engines of the same year 2010-2013!
Cummins get carbon packing in the piston rings causing them to burn oil, oh and they are dropping liners. only had the head off of one Paccar that dropped an injector tip... $0.02!!

Personal opinion, buy what you like/want. stay away from the last Cats unless you have a truck load of $$$$!!

Anything you do start to consider, do searches on the Internet for forums just like this. Before I settled on my 2013 Westernstar DD15, I looked up on Volvos D16 and it scared the hell out of me at the time.
