I copied this from an earlier post, redneck. Generally speaking, you will not be taxed at all on 12cpm of your pay. There are many pros and cons to per diem and I think it depends on each individual's circumstances. We found it to be a good deal for us when we started with TransAm.
You will be paid .30cpm but they will only take taxes out of .18cpm. So, if you have a week that you drove 2500 miles your paycheck would be $750 but you will not pay taxes on $750 ....you will only be taxed on $450. If you are in a 15% tax bracket you would normally have about $112.50 taken out of your check for taxes but since you only pay taxes on $450 you will only owe about $67.50 in taxes......that's just a general simplified idea and I hope I did ok explaining it. Because you are being paid per diem and it is tax free you will not be able to deduct a daily allowance for living expenses from your Federal return.....when you are first starting out and making .30 - .32cpm per diem is usually a better deal for you. Later on as you begin to make more money it is something that you may want to look at when choosing another carrier. -
Are you feeling alright, jaso?

So you would get 300 tax free?

Well found out today i get to have surgery.... Oh Joy!! Transam has been absolutly wonderful throughout this... hard to believe huh? They have done what was needed without question or hesitation every time when it comes to dealing with my injury. Probably going to be off the road untill late march. Its been 3 months already and they are still doing what they need to do just dealing with the joys of physical therapy and doctors lol
passport220, jdmredneck33 and HometimeQueen Thank this. -
Yes, you would have $300 tax free (it is considered your living expenses, meals, etc., while on the road), and pay taxes on the other $450.

I'm sorry you have to go through surgery, gamma, but you need to get it taken care of properly so that it doesn't give you problems later on. We will be looking forward to you getting back to 100% and able to drive again! Prayers for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. Thanks for letting us know how TransAm has been through all of this .....it's good to know that they have done the right thing!gamma, gntorres61 and jdmredneck33 Thank this.
