Do what you wanna do. You're not going to take any advice any way. And (with or without Daddy's help) I see you failing. What the hell do WE care.

2 dui's and no business sense to speak of. I honestly don't see what could go wrong here. I say go for it.
G.Anthony Thanks this. -
Drivers that suggest to you going to school then a company aren't giving that advice because they want you to fail.In fact just the opposite. They want you to get the exp understand trucking and gain more knowledge. So what's wrong with that? Why not wait a yr,your plan of becoming and O/O will still be there.True there are schools that are fraud, but that's where you do your homework and find a school that is not fraud.I recommend a college with like a 3 month course not 3 to 6 weeks,Those are the schools that will rip you off.Good schools are not hard to find.Whats your father think about your plan?
Makasouleater said: ↑I have alot more to learn, I got about 3 more months before i go and obtain my CDL, buy a truck, trailer get dot, mc, insurance, duel tax, llc ect. I am confused though, I see alot of people saying that i shouldent do it this way, I should go sign up for one of these driving schools, and not have my dad whos been a truck driver for the last 20 years teach me. Also getting signed on to one of these big companies ect, when I have enough money to buy all the truck, insurance, 90 days operating costs, llc, fees ect, and effectively be a O/O. Is this because they all want me to go through ####? From everything I have read, and viewed the truck driving schools are terrible, in some cases out right fraud, making you pay money and just teaching you nothing. All this information from what i see is absolutely free, all over the internet, from how to drive a truck, all the laws about the road, even people recorded the lessons them selves, and share them.
I dont see how any one could recommend to some one, yeah go be the ##### at the trucking company. It looks like the new guys get treated like garbage, crap loads, no pay, forced to work to hard ect ect ect. I mean I am not looking to make alot the first years, or maybe not even for the whole thing. But i dont see how not being a O/O from the start if you have the money, is not recommend. From all the load boards I see out there, I am sure some one will give a new O/O a load. Not to mention some of the smaller businesses ect, so i dont see any lack of work. Maybe I only get 10 cents a mile profit, or even no profit to undercut the person to get the experience, but what ever. Looking for seat time in that aspect.
So to recap, my question is why would some one recommend, not being a O/O if you have the money to buy a truck and trailer, I dont mean lease or rent, or get a loan, I mean buy.
Thanks for any information.Click to expand...G.Anthony and Giggles the Original Thank this. -
how old are you ?
how do you know you will like trucking?
just because your dad did it, doesnt mean its for you.
do you have money put back for breakdown etc?
are you buying new or used equipment ?
is your dad gonna help you run things?
many questions play into this scenario...
i would drive for a while first, then if you like it etc, buy a truck . no way i would buy right off the bat.
and no matter if you go to school, or own your own truck, you are still gonna be new with ZERO experience in trucking
best wishes either way
edit, add info
i am not a fan of trucking schools. they dont teach you enough. there is NOTHING like hands on experience.
i went to trucking school. back in 1991. back then, i attended from Jan. to March. trained in Commerce City CO (right outside of Denver for those of you who dont know ) we trained in the mountains. and in the snow. STILL wasnt enough to know anything. they teach you the minimum to help you get your CDL. you can NOT be properly trained and ready to go trucking after that amount of time, ESP NOWADAYS when you can get your CDL in as little as 2 weeks.
as much as you hate it tho, prob go to driving school. pay your dues, find a company to go drive for and once u decide if you do wanna truck buy a truck later....Last edited: Dec 16, 2014

I didnt base it on anything, but on the application it asks for a criminal back ground check. I assumed there for they dont want any one with a criminal back ground.Makasouleater said: ↑Yes, less competition from you as you sit by the side of the road or at the truck stop. You think that truckers are insane? Try under bidding a REAL load board not that useless UShip thingy you see on tv. That is NOT reality, it is a SCRIPTED tv show. Sure, you think that someone is actually going to do 5 years in jail? I hardly doubt that, as first he must be caught. And where pray tell did you get the 5 year jail time from?
Sure, your dad CAN TEACH YOU, but again, as a driver the insurance company may very well DEMAND that if you are in his truck, that you STILL MAY NEED proof that you have had proper, certified training, I highly doubt your dad can certify you.
ok, based solely on what you say, "I still don't think they will" (schools taking you as a student), tells me that you HAVE NOT really gone in person or spoke to anyone at ANY school. ex-cons go to school every day, know why? The schools want that student loan money. So you really haven't done mush research, please do not lie to this old man.
NOOOO, let's NOT use UShip for example. THAT IS A TV SHOW, that you are fantasizing with. Those people have "some to NO experience" whatsoever. Did you ever consider (I think of course not) the operation costs? Do you ever see all the RED numbers in the amount of money LOST to haul some of those loads? Of course not. so go ahead and under cut THAT farce of a load board, and let us all know in as little as 3 months, how much profit you made.
Again, that is not a REAL LOAD BOARD. that is a "wannabe trucker gonna get rich fantasy world".
A REAL load board you will not be able to under cut some "real truckers", but then again, you are not even driving yet.
Yes, yes there are "criminals out there on the road". I ain't the one willing to hurt, cuz as a company driver, I get paid a nice salary. Again, "jail time" would be for the one(s) who get caught, and I can personally guarantee you, that no one will be caught. You say that not all people with felonies are not evil, true that, but rub someone the wrong way, that is a felon, and watch out.
I suggest NOTHING outrageous, I speak the silent words of watch out, you're gonna get it if you under cut real truckers, over the idiots of UShip. To me, a piss poor example of a trucking excuse, that YOU came up with.
I wish you well, but frankly, YOU have some issues.Click to expand...
Any one is insane that thinks it ok to destroy some ones property, because they didnt get a load and lost it to some one else. As far as certified training, I would have the CDL A class that would be enough. Of course the the insurance will be higher, but it is still obtainable.
As for meeting people such as , that think its ok to run around and bust people stuff that make you mad, than your right. If the majority of the people I meet are like that, I and they keep busting all my stuff, and stealing all my stuff, and are just generally evil people. I will collect the insurance money from that act, let the police do what ever, and move on. I am not sure why you are getting so angry lol, threatening my life and property, over my question.Click to expand...Last edited: Dec 17, 2014

I dont know why you would care, I wasent really asking you to care. I was asking why every one is saying the route to success is only rooted in a trucking school.White Dog said: ↑Do what you wanna do. You're not going to take any advice any way. I cant name every one no, but I am studying the video that one of the CDL schools put out, with going with my dad to see the stuff on the truck it self. By the time in 3 months when i go to get a CDL a class license, I will have them memorized.Chinatown said: ↑To get a commercial driver's license, you must be able to pass a CDL pre-trip inspection covering over 100 inspection points. All inspection items & their conditions are included on the checklist. - Engine Compartment
- Front Wheel
- Front Brakes
- Front Suspension
- Driver's Side
- Back of Tractor Cab
- Front of Trailer

- Drive Brakes
- Drive Suspension
- Coupling System
- Rear of Tractor
- Side of Trailer
- Trailer Wheels

Can you name every pre-trip inspection item?

I think after reading all this i will give school a serious thought, as being a better investment than a truck. He thinks my plan is fine, I didnt put the whole thing on here. The plan isnt 100 percent saying I will be a o/o. I dont consider buying a semi as a bad investment, it will make it really easy to pass a CDL A class test. If i dont use it, and get hired to work for some one else, that is fine. The truck wont bust just being in storage, I have a place to keep it for free, and it will always be there if i want it.

Actually, a lot can go wrong with a truck sitting in storage, and cost you a lot of money.......Makasouleater said: ↑Thanks for being the only one to actually answer the question i was asking
