i may may have been one of those who have come off as saying this....but I'm not saying it as a rule in all cases, just an argument the company is making to rule it as a preventable.
In reality it's situation dependent but it is my belief that if the turn can be made in the inside lane than that is the optimal lane since your trailer is going to track to the right and if some numb nut come up on your right you aren't going to see him whereas on the inside you don't have that problem and it's much easier to see traffic coming up on your left should you need to swing out farther.
Iust my opinion. I don't think either lane is necessarily the "wrong" lane

In general Right turns are tighter from the inside lane.. its about the space.. granted some rights have only one lane.. if its to tight then what ?
-
And what if both lanes are too tight and the outside lane brings you into oncoming traffic while four wheelers are darting to the inside?
Personally I don't mind letting traffic clear on my left if it turns out I need that 2nd lane to make that turn. -
I prefer the outside lane.. i can see

You usually, (KEY WORD: USUALLY) have more room to swing wider from the outside turn lane. But if it is just two tight, then your only option is to take BOTH lanes. This is a dangerous move, as there is almost always some idiot 4 wheeler that has no idea what you are doing, or why, and just thinks you are being a "lane hog." Then they get their dander up with the idea "I AIN'T GONNA LET HIM GET AWAY WITH THAT!" The next sound you hear is likely CRUNCH.

Then you do what you have to do. If that means you have to go into oncoming traffic to make your turn, then you do it. BUT YOU DO IT SAFELY! By that, I mean you just stop and wait until it is safe to make the turn without running over oncoming traffic. Sure, it means you will be blocking the road you are turning off of, and people will be pissed off. TOUGH! That is the way it has to be. Of course, if you see the turn is too tight, and can do so, take an "alternate route." But that just isn't always possible, or even a good idea. What you may think looks like a good "alternate route," may turn into a total nightmare.
You do what you have to do. Don't let anybody rush you, don't get all excited about idiots who lay on their horns or show what their mentality is by giving you the old single digit salute.FatDaddy Thanks this. -
Gotta try and stop before the crunch.. then do the stare down of...
what are we gonna do now ?Vilhiem Thanks this. -
I have had to do that coming out of some of these malls. One four-wheeler tried that, luckily got away unscathed, a half-assed buttonhook using both lanes prevents them from getting by until you're safe though. (My experience.)
If I have to turn out into traffic, I have one of two methods...
1) I wait until most of the traffic has cleared and I have the space I need.
2) Wait until another semi comes along. Usually they'll "help" clear the space.
If it's just too tight, or I suspect it's too tight...
1) Find another way.
2) More lube! -
So talked to my boss again today, he wanted me to fill out a sheet for the 3 days I was at home, saying it was without pay, I refused to sign. I then asked him why was I home those 3 days, what rule did I break. He said because you made a turn from the outside lane, I said how come when I went for retraining and I came up to the same turn, I asked which lane do you want me to take, I was told to make it the exact way I made it that day. His reply was who told you that, what was that guys name, I replied I don't know. I said the accident didn't even occur while turning it occurred while going straight, his response was something like it was water under the bridge, I told him if I made a mistake I want to know about it so I don't do it again. He then went on to say if you had a trailer, you would take it on the inside lane. I replied to do that you would have to go into the left lane during your turn, and his reply was yes you would wait till its safe to do so. I then said to him have you ever driving a tractor trailer before? His response was I driven a tractor trailer for over 40 years and took a 40 hour driving instructor course.(I asked the guys at my job if he was ever a trailer driver and they said to their knowledge in the last 20 years no, maybe he considers having the license in his pocket for 40 years as driving a tractor trailer), I replied then you know when you make a turn you look at the mirror in the direction of the turn(meaning right mirror for right turns etc) during the turn, you may look at the opposite mirror a second before making the turn, but during the turn your suppose to watch your trailer. He basically blew me off after that and was like you can grieve it.

....I have said it before. And in this case don't mind repeating it.
