Howdy, like many others I have lurked this forum for knowledge for sometime and never bothered posting or making an account. Finally decided to post as I have made serious attempts to start my new career as a CDL driver. I have a few years non CDL XP and realized this trucking business is for me. Unfortunately have had a hard time finding a company that will train me (even though I have a class A learners). Reason being I have a couple non violent felonies and misdemeanors from about 8 years ago (juvenile/Prior record). So have thought about maybe getting a foot in as a dock worker somewhere and work my way in the cab perhaps at a fedex freight or similar running LTL. Anyways, I look forward to and appreciate the knowledge spread throughout here.

Did you try the WIA program through the state? This program pays for CDL school. Might require some pre-hires but several companies will give you pre-hire letters.
Which companies have you applied with that turned you down?OlChev Thanks this. -
I did try the WIA some time ago. I don't recall why but they did denie me. I was denied by knight, swift, cr england, prime, and a couple others that I don't recall at the moment. But all of wich were primarily otr. Perhaps I understood the WIA program wrong, I wld have to check it out again. Do you mean if I were to get on with a company like conway for example and work the dock I could get a letter from them and train for free?
EDIT. If I remember right I was denied the WIA becouse my previous job was in demand as a non cdl driver.Chinatown Thanks this. -
What I mean is, sometimes a private or community college CDL school will want you to get pre-hire letters from companies before they let you enroll. They want to ensure you will be hired before you spend money on tuition. Try some more applications.
Schneider - pays for private CDL school.
Celadon
Southern Refrigerated Transport
CRST
Con-way Freight - has their own CDL school
Mid-west Coast Transport
Pride Transport
Wil-Trans
KLLM
Some websites aren't up to date and may have "must live within X miles of terminal" etc. Ignore all that and apply anyway. Just a few minutes on each website for a quick short application.Last edited: Dec 24, 2014

Oh great, thanks for the help chinatown. I will certainly look into these companies.

Make sure your paperwork is in order; application is truthful, original birth certificate, original social security card & not laminated.OlChev Thanks this.

As always. Just hard for companies to accept woth my record. I'm always honost to them about it

If all else fails, find the cheapest, shortest CDL school and then apply with:
Carolina Cargo
Martin Enterprises of the Carolinas
These are good 2nd chance companies that give drivers a break, but you will have to complete a CDL school first. They will also give you a pre-hire letter.OlChev Thanks this. -
Excellent.. I'm most interested in linehaul jobs. So I will probably try conway and fedex. Although I don't think fedex exactly advertises to train people I have heard they will train their dockworkers to drive

Im in the same boat as you. Mine were 5 years ago. Carolina Cargo put me to work, I was very happy, but after a few months and team mates I had to leave. Then I worked pulling log's. I missed the road & left thinking ok I have over 1 year driving exp. Wrong move for me. I have been turned down from probably 50 companies. Iam sick knowing someone with no cdl but the willness to get one can be pre-hired when I can't even get an interview. My MVR is good. But yeah I'm praying Buel or Martin will hire me. You may have more open doors being 8 years back. I hope for you, you do. It's hard hearing No 4,5,6 times a day.
