I took my IL permit, general knowlage, air brakes, combination vehicle, double/tripple, tanker and hazmat in August of 2013. Did not have a medical card at the time, did not need it to take any of the tests. You do need your background check and finger prints done before you can take the hazmat test. This was all last year, can not guarantee that nothing has changed. call the secoratary of state office tomorrow.

Don't get your hazmat until you transfer you new cdl to your home state.
-
As a resident of Illinois I can answer your question. You don't need your medical card/physical to get your permit and endorsements.
-
YES! Thank you! I will get them, then.
I did find that the background check (et al) must be done before HAZMAT is granted, for obvious reasons (Patriot Act requirement), so I will wait for that. I assume Prime will be covering that, which would explain the $100 fee. As suggested, I will wait to get that.
Thanks everyone! I can now go back to Plan A -
Good luck, if you can pass the online practice tests you should be OK.

well kinda in the same shoes as you also in illinois. im not sure where im going to be working yet but next friday i plan to get my permit. i already got my medical card. because i also didnt know if i needed one to get my permit. its a good idea to get a dot physical now while you're are still home. reason being you can have something to cause you to fail and cause you to be sent home from prime. luckily for me i went and had my own dot physical done only 75 bucks and im young and fit i thought i be in the clear with no problems, but little did i know i failed the vision test(i thought i had decent vision, i even passed vision test for my regular drivers license with no glasses the next day). had to see an eye doctor and get a prescription glasses and i passed my physical 3 weeks later. so its good to find out if you needed something to be corrected now vs while you're at a job

how is wolf driving school. i work in elgin i always pass by there on rt72 seem like a busy school

I passed them, but I'm not happy with some of the scores. Got 80 on two. Not good enough, in my book, especially since most of the ones I missed were due to not properly reading the questions. *smacks forehead* One more time through and all should be well!

I'm not worried about being sent home from Prime; although I may just spend a few bucks on an updated pair of eyeglasses. Thanks for reminding me of that! LOL Even if I don't do that, I'll still be fine.
What part of the eye test failed you? Just curious.
