Mastering shifting is when you can do everything, up shift, downshift, rev match...etc, without thinking about it. I think 500 miles is about right.

If mastering means you don't think about it, then I've mastered lots of things!

As if one was driving a 4-wheeler with manual trans. I'd stretch it a little further. It's mastered when your student misses a gear and you can tell them to keep driving the truck, stay off the throttle, then reach over and slide it in the right gear.

I have $1000 that says you're right, Hearing drivers rub it into gear at a dead stop is among the most common, surprising (at first), strangest and unnecessary truck noises on this planet.
Made me cringe, every time. -
Shift enough times, you'll get there. But remember this. All trips are different. Heavy loads up hills, traffic, weather, lots of things will impact your driving. I never heard of a driver who never scratched or missed.

I drive an automatic. Shifting mastered from the start.
. But seriously, took me a month to learn a standard well

I failed countless road tests and lost so many opportunities due to shifting. Now I can drive perfectly and get compliments on my shifting. ... Took me about ten days total to get it perfect

Seriously, you would have to be born in a truck a real " NATURAL" to master it in 500 miles. Id venture to say 10,000 miles to not really"think about it". Load weight, switching tractors effects everything. "Listen, watch RPM's,speedometer and pay attention close to "how Fast RPMs fall off". Its not rocket science just feeling what the truck ,"needs t. do" Shouldnt take over 2 fingas to shift. If it does WRONG GEAR selected or RpMs,speed not right, try another gear.Vilhiem Thanks this.

i chose 1000-5000 miles i guess it kinda depends what your definition of "mastering" is
i would say when i first started learning it took me a couple hundred miles before i could really effectively move the truck down the road. by 5k miles it was becoming more second nature. but still might think about what gear i am in or where i need to go next or might grind one every now and then.
now after several years i still might rub a gear from time to time, pretty much never grid a gear. i dont think about what gear i am in or watch the tach or speedo or for purposes of making the shift i just drive the truck and i run threw the gears with little to no thought about it.
