i currently own a Mack and a Freightliner. Trucks are trucks there all going to have things break all are going to need maintenance and repairs. I like my mack better than the freightliner quite a few things are built better on the mack. the specs that my mack has works better for me. freightliner has better parts availability and a better dealer network and mack uses a lot of proprietary parts that has to come from the dealer.

It would seem that the Mack is newer and more aerodynamic than the fld120 one of freightliners oldest trucks they were out in 90's -
the old "R" model and "U" Model Macks were Tough as they come...you could throw a grenade at them and they'd come back firing at you.....You could even 'spin' the engine opposite direction by overtorque(Anyone ever do that?) dirty exhaust bellowing out the air cleaner........I never seen a tougher truck than those macks..
anyway,i think the New Macks are also interchangeable with Volvo....at Least I know they Both are sold at the same dealership
Im partialto FORD myself.........Still driving 1 today, most guys in the sector today don't even know what the heck im driving till they see the hood"semi" retired Thanks this. -
my mack is a 2000 my fld is a 95. In my oppion the fld's and classics are some of the best trucks freightliner ever made, they are a much more solid truck than say a columbia or century imo. my mack is a bit better on fuel. i believe the fld's production run came out in the late 80's and ended mid 2000's

Coming from the guy me who had a 2005 freightliner classic xl with a Detroit 14.0l I think that my grandpa 99 century class can pull better than my classic xl and going up a hill when he is in cruise control and he switches gears his trucks does not come out of cruise but mine did the only the my truck was better for looks and space and the wheelbase the but his century had a n14 that's all I talk about

Hi stayinback, I hear ya'. The 1st T/T job I had, I drove a 1975 R model pulling a 28 ft. dump trailer, and I tell you what, I took that R model places that trucks shouldn't go. I was a rough riding beast though(probably because of the short dump trailer), it shook so bad, it would pop out of gear, and I had to have a tarp strap wrapped around the shifter. I truly believe it was the truck that gave me my bad back.
I do remember Macks running backwards. One of the drivers coming out of a gravel pit was in the wrong gear, and killed the engine, and rolled backwards, to our amazement, the thing fired up, and like you say, exhaust belching out the air cleaner, and he put it in reverse and went forward. Man, we laughed about that. I've seen the old Detroit's run backwards too.
What kind of Ford do you have? I ran many Ford's in my time. The Louisville was a darned good truck. I heard, when they stopped making that truck, half the people in Louisville Ky. were unemployed. And the CL-9000 (Large Marge) was rumored to have the smoothest ride of any truck made. I knew a guy that had 1, and he said he could put a cup of coffee on the dash and not spill it. Sadly, that air ride cab was a nightmare, as I remember seeing several CL's with one corner down, or worse and many owners converted them to a regular cab.stayinback Thanks this. -
Excellent, I've got a friend who just got a CDL, and bought a truck, but been having problems getting insured due to no experience, I'll ask if he tried Progressive

I drive slip seat. On Tuesday my dispatcher handed me bill to drive a 2014 Mack which he said had just came back from the dealership shop, terrific I thought. 300 miles later truck with only 31,000 miles on it would only run 37 mph top speed. I took it into a TA truck stop and they said the only thing that they could do is replace the fuel filters and if that didn't work it would need to go to a dealer which there was one 8 miles away. I opted to drive 37mph to the dealer and wait 2 hours for their shop to open. At 06:30 an employee came out and told me I would need to move my truck since I was parked in employee parking. I explained that I needed a repair and he said the last he heard they were a WEEK out before they could look at the problem. I had heard that at one point my company had a combination of 31 trucks into dealerships at Denver and Salt Lake with a couple of the trucks being there over 30 days. This is due to new emissions equipment being added to the trucks. In 2007 the diesel particulate filter was added to the exhaust which sent the fuel mileage plunging. For 2011 the diesel particulate filter was replaced with a catalyst chamber urea injection system that has been wildly unreliable.

I'm going to guess you are working in Cali ...? I would advise you not to buy any 2009 truck. They are all crap some worse than others ...... Why do you think prices are so low on them...
if you must have a Cali truck get a def truck preferably 2012 or newer....
