Double clutch? "You can't fool me, I know one of them is a brake!"
-
Most folks float , including myself once in a while , but , every now and then you'll have the need to double clutch , the guys in the heavy-haul / off road situations will attest to that fact. I'm old school , believe that the clutch is there for reason , use it more than floating , but that's me. It's been argued over an over which is best /worst.....I'll leave that to the "experts"
OldHasBeen, stryker5673 and okiedokie Thank this. -
This is only "My Humble Opinion."
As long as your in training I would continue to shift as you know how.
And after training and your on your own you can learn how to float the gears, that is what seems best for you, that way you will look better to your instruction and not as likely to make a mistake. -
My truck is broken, they didn't put a clutch pedal in it.Red Hot Mess Thanks this.

Can't double clutch to save my life. I've tried it a few times and failed each time. Before I got my truck licence, I went out with my neighbour in his truck and he let me try driving it. I went for the clutch and I got a stern "NO!". I've floated ever since.

I learned how to drive a truck by floating the gears. Was with my brother-in-law in his truck and he taught me that way. I decided at that time that with my young family, the otr life wasn't for me and I already had a pretty good job anyway. Twenty years later I'm learning how to drive again in the school format this time. It was in a cabover and they wanted me to double clutch. After a few days the trainer riding with me asked if I could maybe shift a little smoother. I started floating the gears. He told me that was good but the other trainers wouldn't like it. Told me to move my left leg like I was using the clutch but keep on floating them, as with the cabover the guy in the jump seat couldn't really see anyway. I'm sure they all knew what I was doing but never said anything to me about it. The clutches in todays truck are made pretty good and I have never had any wear out in any of the trucks I've owned or driven.

Learn to double clutch for now, chances are that you will have to double clutch on your road test.
Learn to double clutch later, after you have the CDL in hand. -
I train for a company that requires double clutching in order for trainees to graduate and get their own truck. Almost every trainee gets into my truck from from CDL school with very limited time behind the wheel. I generally let them double clutch the first day or two to get some of the vice grips off the steering wheel, then have them try floating a few times on the open road to teach them how LITTLE they have to move the throttle pedal to hit the rpm's and how GENTLY they should be NUDGING into the next gear AS THEY slightly move the throttle.
After a few sessions of learning to float then double clutching becomes much easier.
I started out floating years ago and had to adjust to double clutching getting back into trucking a couple of years ago in order to pass the DMV test and the company drive tests. Now I float 99.5% of the time, sometimes single clutching to "tap out" of a gear that gets sticky if I'm up against the governor.kiwi23 Thanks this.
