The truck I drive is exactly what you described. 07 Columbia 14l Detroit ex-Penske. I got it at 550k and it has 738k on it now. It doesnt use any oil and has just simply been a good truck. The turbo was changed around 600k but otherwise it just runs great. I wasnt sure about the rental truck idea to start with but this one has made me think that Penske might just have their act together on the maintenance.

I have been renting from and dealing with Penske for literally the past 20 years. If it was off a Penske lease...no worries. If it was a rental, look elsewhere.
Pesnke USED to run a top notch rental fleet and turn over rental vehicles every few years. Now since the economy tanked they are running their trucks into the ground. We have had NUMEROUS breakdowns over the past few years where before we would never have a truck older than 2 years old...so much so that we told them to take a hike and are now exclusively with Ryder.
If they are selling a rental vehicle that means that means that is is costing them more to maintain than they are making, which should be a warning to you! -
A former employer bought 4 '02ish Columbia daycabs. He didn't have any real problems with them. I would be cautious about anything with a EGR system.
russtrucker Thanks this. -
2002 trucks didn't had egr. Only after 03 model years they start trying putting the egr engines.

I know that. I never stated they did.

I think after this t600, I'll take a glider kit truck with 12.7 detroit, built my own 3406e, or 6nz c15.

I hear ya Russ. A glider will be my first "new" truck.
russtrucker Thanks this. -
Cowpie has his glider ordered as new.
