    Hi,
I'm a chiropractor - 28 years experience in San Diego, CA. In about three months, I'm going to be certified as a DOT Medical Examiner. I am familiar with the doctor's role, but I want to find out how truckers decide where to go for their exams. Is it usually their decision or their employer's? Are there mobile DOT Medical Examiners - they come to your house and do the exam and certify you at home? If not, does that sound like a good idea? If you could let me know where on the forum I should ask those questions (besides here) I would appreciate that. Thanks - much appreciated. Glad I found this forum!

Normally the Company that is hiring either send you to a certified Examiner like Concentra Medical where theres a staff of nurses who take your blood pressure, perform physical test, urine and sugar test, take your weight, and ask you about any medications that you may be taking or any other health problems, or when you are about to get hired on theres always a doctor and nurse at the Company Terminal you are about to get hired on and make you perform a series of test, lifting of 30-50lb dumbells, some make you squat for 20-30 feet and turn around and if your blood pressure is past a certain number you wont get your D.O.T. card or you wont get he specific Route you want i.e. REGIONAL or DEDICATED,

But Owner Operators we go to who ever we choose as long as they are a Certified D.O.T. Doctor
But also i like to mention tha the D.O.T. Physical rates are increasing, and we pay out of pocket for that,
The company drivers D.O.T card is usually paid by the hiring company. If its a local company and the driver allready have theirs, then sometimes theyll let the driver use that one instead of paying for new one.

i never heard of a mobile D.O.T. Examiner only mobile clinics to come test your PEE PEE in case of a company ACCIDENT, but i guess its doable as long as its withing FMCSA/D.O.T. Regulations.

I would love to have a Mobile D.O.T. doctor i hate sitting in the office for 3-4 hours just to be seen by the doctor with all those people in the waiting room, then once you get to the room its another 45 min wait, IM ALL FOR IT IF ITS LEGAL AND DOABLE, But im pretty sure ITS ALOT RED TAPE TO GET DONE, let us know how that turns out for you

hope this helps you out and welcome aboard we need more medical EXPERTISE on this FORUM

I go to a chiropractor for my medical cards. I use him because he is the same guy i use for my chiropractic care.

I don't know that I would use a mobile service where they came to my house. I think more important to me is that the price is reasonable and scheduling is flexible. Sometimes I might not know exactly when ill be home and might not be home for more than a day or two and have 100 other things to do and my med card coming due so its nice to be able to call and get a appointment same day or at least next day.

For me it is nice to have my med card done by someone I am familiar with and knows my general health it makes it seem a bit more informal and more routine than going to someone that that doesn't know you from the next guy.

I went through orientation at a company that had a team (doctor and assisitant) do the multiple DOT physicals. They said they had contracts to service several companies. While I know of a few most examiners that pretty much only do dot physicals, most examiners do not depend on these physicals for the bulk of their income. One of the big complaints drivers have now is that some of the examiners seem to be in bed with the sleep study/Cpap industry and are mandating studies that are not needed. Not to say, such study is never needed but to use simply the bmi, neck size etc standards only while not taking anything else about the individual into account is wrong. If you can give drivers a fair, unbiased physical using the criteria the FMCSA requires you should be ok. Not a lot of truckstops in your area though, but I'm sure you know that and have a plan to market yourself. Good luck to you.

Thanks for that information - very helpful. I have not found any FMCSA regulations prohibiting a mobile DOT exam service. You mentioned the professional fee for the exam is increasing. If the doctor was mobile, then he/she wouldn't need a physical office and that could cut the doctor's overhead, allowing him/her to charge a lower fee. That's my thinking. I do have to do more investigation on the FMCSA regulations before I would begin a mobile service.

Thanks for the imput - very appreciated. Yes, that makes total sense to go to someone you know - I would do the same. The reasonable price is really important - if I set up a mobile service it would be cost conscious in favor of the trucker. Hours are important too so I would set it up for extended hours.

Thanks for the response - very helpful info. Did the company that did your DOT exam seem to have providers that favored more sleep study / CPAP studies? My business plan would be to limit my practice to mobile DOT exams and qualification exams for people buying life insurance policies. I'm just doing preliminary investigation on the viability of such a practice - that's why your information is so helpful and appreciated.

Also, you mentioned that there are not many truck stops where I live. This may be a silly question, but do the companies that contract with trucking companies to do DOT exams have offices near truck stops? I've thought about that, too - contracting with a truck stop to set up a trailer on the property and provide exams in a location convenient to truckers- unless that is already being done.

And do you have any suggestions where a good place would be to set up in CA where I could have a large trucker population to serve? I'm flexible - actually I would prefer a location that was not in a big city - I prefer small town or rural life.

I guess I'm asking for a lot of info, but any you could give me would really be appreciatied.

In the past some enterprising examiners have set up shop at or near high traffic truck stops around the country. I'm not sure how many of them signed up on the new registry though. Some truck stops have extra office or other space for rent. Such businesses as freight brokers, cb shops and even barber shops and yes dot physical examiners are located there. I don't get out there to Cali too much anymore but i'm sure someone will be along with some suggestions.

Doc you mite have NEW NICHE here,in fact the more i think about it,you would be A THREAT to stationary doctors, because this would be a GOOD IDEA,Imagine companys not having to take a driver off the road because his D.O.T. card is expired, they could simply send a mobile D.O.T.Doctor over to the truckers location and perform physical, now if i were you i would charge the MEGA companys more but give the OWNER OPERATORS a big DISCOUNT,"HINT HINT" WINK WINK, lol

This might sound a bit homophobic? But I try to find a female, can't stand to have a guy touch me in one particular area, that being said, there are or at least there use to be some mobile DOT med places around, but doubt they where sanctioned, not sure I'd want some unknown person show up at my home though
