You do not need a logbook in the firetruck, BUT the hours worked at the fire station and on calls are considered ON DUTY. You get paid for the hours and they must be considered when you work as a driver in any other driving job driving a truck over 10,000 lbs.Even local drivers must keep track of their hours, not in a logbook, but on a timecard or other means of keeping track of hours. If a local driver works over 12 hours in a day, then they must log the whole week in a logbook. Ask any DOT inspector in your area, look up the rules at www.fmcsa.dot.gov Sorry this is not what you wanted to hear, but insurance companies have to know they are insuring a wide awake driver.

Any time worked at a second job must be considered when figuring out hours of service. One company I was at even said you should declare the time spent working on your own truck maintaining it and even the time spent doing your taxes. The time spent going to and during a drug test is recordable event that must be logged as well. No I don't think the doing your taxes or bookkeeping time gets logged very often, but the rules say that any time spent working is considered on duty and must be recorded to the hours of service.

These rules have been in place for many years, some of them are being enforced more, especially when lawyers can point to the fact your driver was exceeding the HOS rules and therefore my client is due a very large sum of money.

Yes, all hour working, legally you would have to show, you would need to show the hours you worked as a firefighter, then take 10 hours off, this would give you a full 11/14 for the day, good luck, but if your out on your 4 days off as a firefighter, and break down, there could be a chance you won't make it back
