Hi guys,
I want to be able to haul 70k-80k lbs of equipment on a lowboy.
I am in California if that matters....
1. What tractor axle setup would you recommend?
2. What trailer axle setup would you recommend?
3. Does California recognize a triaxle lowboy for their weight charts?
Thanks for your help

if it was me id go with 46k rears, 20k pusher, 18-20k front
trailer 22.5 low pro tires . not sure if CA does recognize a tripple setup on the rear, would go with an all steel trailer 70-80k on the trailer is a #### ton of weight, would put you at about 120-130k GVWStroked F550 Thanks this. -
For you to haul 70k-80k of equipment (not 80k gross), damutt is correct. You would most likely need/want a 4-axle tractor, and a 3+1 RGN, or you could go with a 3+2+3, but if you haven't hauled a setup with a jeep, they can be a PITA.

thanks guys for your responses
Truckdad, thats a nice setup you had
What were your empty axle weights running that setup?
Does CA recognize a 3 axle trailer?
For the pusher, should I go with a steerable or non steerable? (pros & cons?) -
cant remember exactly, Im thinkin 9K/14.5K/10K approx.
I am 99 44/100 % sure CA does allow 60K on the tridem. Something about 10'1" comes to mind. I never used a tri axle set-up. the H/H industry in CA put up a struggle to fight the allowance but lost. The other states should follow suit & allow the 16 tire groups on their roads. (some do). AS for the pusher, I am ignorant. There are a lot of guy on here that Im sure know about this. -
I found the info pertaining to tridems you can have them but you only get a max of 52,500 for green weight and 60k lbs for the purple weight chart
I am surprised this info was so easy to find lol

You can get the tridem bonus (depending on axle spacing may only be 58k +) but what you are going to run into is most 3 axle RGN trailers are going to be too long from Kingpin to center of rear axle to run legally in CA (i.e. over 48' OAL). The 3 axles you see are mostly 53' or longer - there are a few that have very short wells 24' that are only 48' OAL that will be legal. Yes, you can get a permit for the 53' trailer if the load justifies it. The problem you are going to run into living in CA is then what do you do with the non-compliant trailer when it is empty? you would not be able to run any legal loads with it,
On the lift axle there are a number of rules that you must follow and the tractor must be certified in person with a load to make sure it complies - 1 must use a common suspension (common air) - no 2 leveling valve set ups where the air is adjustable on the lift axle 2 the controls for lifting the axle must be outside the cab - no dash dump valve 3 the axle must equalize within 10% weight of each other 4 you must run four tires on the axle or you will not qualify for purple bonus (58k-60k) only purple standard which is around 51-52k depending on axle spacing.
No you cannot run a 3+1 east coast stinger setup or even a 2+1 east coast setup for extra weight. The only 3+1 or 2+1 setup will require CA evener beam setup (west coast). There is a reason all those CA guys run 16 tire trailers with 22' wells out there - see truckdad's photos.
I have seen a Cozad trailer 53' OAL set up with 2 KP settings with one 16" KP setting and one very deep KP setting to get the KP to rear axle to the 40' requirement (3rd axle lifted) but you are talking custom ordered $120-$140k trailer. I think you get 24' in the well with that setup.
just some thoughts from someone who has looked at a number of different options to try to get the weight you are looking for in CA.Stroked F550, truckdad and Raped ape Thank this. -
Rontonio, doesnt TX & NM recognize our 16 tire groups?
-
Thank you Rontonio that information is quite helpful
for the equipment I will be hauling a 24 foot well should be perfect ...I did see 53 footers but there are also 48 footers with a 3 axle set up
A trailer like this should be perfect for my needs
