How smart is it? Sure I can get my license, but should I? It seems as though 23 is the age to get a job, but that is a lot of time of doing nothing from 18-23. So, I was just wondering if there were any other truckers that have stories of them starting young and how they did it. I am very curious, as I would like to start driving as soon as I get outa high school.
18 year old trucker?

You could get your CDL and be an o/o and purchases your own insurance
nicedude80 Thanks this. -
Get the CDL Class A. Ma & Pa LTL/TL Company ( About 50 units and 100 trailers 1 terminal and 1 small sorting center ) around me that hires 18-20 year olds. Starting pay is $21hr for intrastate. Keep your nose clean and be a mature teenager, Anything is possible. Look around your area for that Ma & Pa.
Clarify: It's never too early getting a CDL. Even better in the long run is going to a ACCREDITED CDL driving mill school. Trucking Companies / Insurance Companies love that crap.nicedude80 Thanks this. -
..to hell with college?
dog-c and nicedude80 Thank this. -
Thanks for your advice! I am still 14, but am eagerly awaiting the future. Also, how would someone so young become a o/o? Trucks are expensive! And trailers! Plus I wouldn't have any experience.

I wish instead of going to college I put my tuition into a truck, the ROI is significantly better long run.
College is great, but in the end the money always wins....
i know several people with college degrees that have not benefitted by 'having' such a degreeLast edited: Jan 19, 2015

Yeah o/o would be a mistake. A new driver with no experience will have a tough time getting insurance and if you get it, you'll pay an arm and a leg. Add to that only being 18 and it makes your insurance chances worse. Then figure that you have to be 21 to participate in interstate commerce and you won't have the greatest selection of loads.
That said I got my cdl when I was 18 so I can tell you what I did to fill the gap. I got a job working for the local miller beer distributor driving a route delivering beer. It's back breaking work but you get to drive a semi, and for an 18 year old the pay was great. When I left there I went to work as a yard jockey at a local LTL company for a few years before I turned 21 and started driving on the road for them. Moving roughly 100 trailers a night for 2.5 years means before I really started driving I had more experience backing trailers than a large portion of drivers on the road. Knock on wood but to this day I haven't had a backing accident since going on the road.
To sum it up, you will be hard pressed to find an actual driving job before you're 21 but you can do things to get relevant experienceAminal Thanks this. -
18 to 23 a long time. Oh, thats rich. LOL. Trust me you'll have a life time to grow up and become a slave to the system. Don't rush it. Go party and chase women for a few years. Or like the rich call it go to....College.

Kid you're only 14, go be an engineer, a doctor or work with computers.
As sad as it sounds you could absolutely fail at life, still get a CDL and make decent money at 45 years old. Go to college man, truck driving will always be here.DriverToBroker, GenericUserName, Aminal and 2 others Thank this. -
Do you honestly think the advice of telling a kid to rack up 100k in loans to go to college is wise?
CHHALL3, gentleroger, Arielit0oo and 5 others Thank this.
