    Welcome jrod1992,

Stay local for now jrod. You don't want to miss the next few years watching your boy grow into a little man. I wish I could give back the years to my kids that I spent steaming around the world on Navy ships. I did almost all my time at sea. (16 of 20) My son and daughter never mention it to me directly, but I know they resent the fact that I was always at sea when they were young, and that I am spending a lot of my time with the grand kids.

What ever you decide............... "Fair winds and following seas pards"

PS: Give the boy a extra squeeze for all of us.

thanks everyone and RetiredUSN I was thinking of going over the road for a yr or two just to get the experience I need that looks good to local companies, I have no idea what to look for in companies and would like some advice on how you guys chose the companies your with, I know almost no one has stuck with the first companies they go with but still would like to know what to look for and how to choose

Not all drivers want local & I'm a good example of that. Those jobs are there though if you have all the endorsements. In fact, a guy that went to that same school you're planning to attend had two local job offers . He took the one with Airgas. A few drivers on here posted they were hired right out of CDL school with fuel hauling jobs locally. Ferrellgas and Amerigas sometimes hire new CDL grads for local work. You have to go search for those type companies and just walk in and ask for an application and interview.

Which city/town do you plan to live in?

As to RetiredUSN comment about sea duty, I met a retired submarine sailor that spent his entire 20 yrs. career on sea duty. Some do that and then do another 20 yrs. as Merchant Seaman with Military Sealift Command; I met a few of those guys in Olongapo, Philippines. Geeeze, could those guys drink & party!

You're in a good location for many OTR companies.
What are you interested in; flatbed, refrigerated, tanker?
You can run OTR with hazmat/tankers and make good money; usually $60K+ even for a new hire. If you want this, get TWIC card. Google for nearest TWIC office. TWIC is needed for entry to military bases, chemical plants, sea ports.
Tanker companies that hire new CDL grads:

    Groendyke Transport
    SVTN
    Trimac Transportation
    Schneider Bulk
    Superior Carriers
    CTL Transportation
    Tidewater Transit

Plan early by submitting applications the first day of CDL school. Some guys do this even as early as a week before CDL school starts. This way you can have a good job waiting the day you graduate. Submit as many applications as you want, then look over the job offers and choose the one that seems the best fit for you.

These are all companies right here in Alabama? And yes you were telling about that twic card in another post. Im I will be going for hazmat, tanker and flatbed. I will have to start doing research and figure out the companies that offer me what I need/want
