I did a couple of those practice tests, too, but when I took the real test - the questions were different. Not totally different, but worded differently. Some of the questions seem to be trick questions.
I think the hardest thing people get tripped up on is the pre-trip inspection. The guy I did mine with never let me get past under-the-hood, he automatically passed me on the rest of it (and there was a lot left to go, like the rest of the tractor and the entire trailer!) because he got mad that I found an open wire scraping along the frame and because I started naming parts that he didn't have any idea what they were or what they did. He got SO defensive! "Well, smart-###, you think you know everything, I check my truck EVERY DAY!!!! I go over it with a fine tooth comb, and here comes some guy like you finding a LITTLE problem with MY truck!" -- as if I had made an issue out of it, I found it and told him he might want to get it fixed!
He made the rest of the test a pain. He took me on a course where every known obstacle or trick to man was present. He wanted me to parallel park on a street that had hydrants lined up on it so close, you COULDN'T legally park on any portion of it! He tried to tell me I had stopped at a light over the white line, that I wasn't in gear over the RR tracks (I was DEFINITELY in gear - geeze, one of the first things you learn), on and on. He took me into a left-hand turn lane - another trick - the lane that it feeds into immediately disappears into the center lane - so I just went for the center lane, he dinged me for that. Said I was speeding, on and on and on. What did that sign you just passed say? I told him - you know they are going to try to trip you up, but this guy was on a mission. He wanted me to turn right at a corner where you have to go WAY into the other, opposing lanes to make the turn. I wasn't biting on that one, I just pulled out as far as I could and stopped, blocking cars. They had to all back up to let me around, because there was NO WAY I was rolling my tandems over the sidewalk at the corner with this guy testing me!
At the end? He smirked at me - told me I did an excellent job and passed me. Just a cantankery old feller that wanted to give another old driver a hard time : ) We ended on good terms. -
I was informed to use somthing such as;Google search whatever subject etc. ( google:cdl test answers .com -
Sounds like the guy who administered my first CDL test. Gah, what a PITA. Even wanted me to turn right onto a one way street - going the other way. I went around the block.
When all was done, he smiled and said "Excellent Job". I'm thinking they're throwing that stuff in there just to see if you really have a clue. And, truth to tell, I wish more examiners were like that - including the 4-wheeler guys. It would improve the quality of driver on the road. -
PITA : PITA whats People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have to do with it ?
LOL-- case in point Read and re-read the questions making sure what there asking ,
some questions ask the same thing ,but worded differently , and under standing what there asking ,
as for the examiner sending you down the wrong way , would be illegal for them to try and make you break the laws , needles to say who are they going to believe student or the examiner , its a power thing if you get one of these guys , , they have the power , at that point
on the signage , i never even thought about it until i watched the video , but its a good point to remember , PAY ATENTION , you only have one shot at it , ( that's what i tell myself ) -
I've been a valued member of many boards, but apparently have opened my mouth to much to soon in this one...because everytime I turn around I'm getting censored for something. -
Aw, that's just cuz everybody hates you. Ain't you figgered dat out yet? -

I, too, was a bit apprehensive before and about taking my CDL permit test. However, I just took it yesterday and passed the core, passenger & school bus endorsements, & the air brakes test on the first try!
I must say a few things which I believe to be true and should be of great help to you:
1) How to study for this: Read the Introduction, Core and Endorsement Sections, the Air Brakes, and whatever other sections you are required to take for your particular vehicle application. If you are going for the bus permit, then you must take the School Bus test, too, and the same applies for the Combination, Hazmat and other sections. As you read each section, underline all important facts and figures (numbers) with a number 2 pencil and put an asterix in the margin so that you can later go back and refresh your memory of these items when you do your "post-study review".
2) Answer ALL of the review questions at the end of each section. And whether you know the answer or not, look back at the section and find the correct information before you move on to the next questions or sections. When you complete a section, take a study break and take your mind off of the test completely. Then go back to the book and start the next section, or review the study questions again to see if this information is being understood and absorbed. Repeat all of this with each following section.
3) If you company has supplied you with some test questions, answer those and look them ALL up in the book, just as you did before. You can also find these study questions at cristcdl, you can google it. The advantage there is that they will grade you and show what you got either right or wrong before you move on to the next test or section. You can also go back and correct your answers and then submit again until you have them all answered correctly, and then print out that test for study and review.
4) Get a good night's sleep and then review each section the next day! This, in my view, is the only way to see if this information will stay with you until you take the exams (at the very least). All keep in mind that these study questions have four-part multiple choice answers, and the actual test questions will probably have only three choices.
5) Go to the test and stay calm and relaxed while you take the test. Do not get distracted by others who are there. Do not bring anything with you except what you need to apply for the permit and take these tests. In my case, they insisted on me using their #2 pencils and not my own. But they also repremanded anyone who had a baseball cap on, a cell phone turned on, or any other article of clothing, book, device, etc.
6) Answer all of the questions since an unanswered question will be marked as a wrong answer. In all probability, you will get a few wrong in each section, even if you have studied thoroughly. And stick with your first best answer, unless you find a good reason to change it in the event that you misread the question. Remember that you need to pass with 80% correct.
7) I don't think that the test is difficult, but you definitely have to read the book and study for it, since there is a lot of information to be learned. Many take the test without even reading the book first, so it's no wonder why they fail it on the first attempt. Keep in mind that many refuse to follow suggestions or rules, even if it is in their own best interest. Others take the test several times before they pass (if they ever do pass it), but I'll bet you they had to finally sit down, read the book and study for it, in the long run, in order to pass it. For me, I took about a week to study for this.
8) If you follow my suggestions and review everything you need to study and review at least two or three times, you should pass it on the first shot. These questions are based upon common sense and the physics of driving a large vehicle, or in the case of a school bus, with a greater number of passengers than as with a just a car, SUV or van.
I think that you will understand and appreciate the fact that all DMV CDL tests are designed to deter drivers from operating these vehicles without having a sense of safety, responsibility for their cargo, hazardous materials, passengers, other drivers, pedestrians and property. And that is what a CDL is all about... safety, responsibility, caution, alertness, courtesy to other drivers, emergency & fire prevention, damage to and from the transportation of cargo, and above all, the welfare of yourself and your passengers! In fact, by getting your CDL, you are saying that you are the safest driver on the road (and you should be!).
If you are so inclined to take this responsibility extremely seriously while you are driving on the road for vehicle, cargo and passengers, then you will be an asset to your company, and a champion to others in your vehicle and around you on this frail planet of ours! And that should make you feel quite as positive as I do!
So take your time, study, review and you will do just fine!
And just think of this... if everyone would study and pass the CDL test, driving test and training, there would probably be a lot less accidents on our roads today!Last edited by a moderator: Sep 19, 2008
