Hi
My husband is a Redi-Mix driver and has been since he graduated from CDL Driving School, 3 1/2yrs. He wants to get started driving OTR or regionally, but is not sure how to get started. Since he is not a recent graduate will companies take him on? Does anyone have any suggestions.
Thank You

US Express was running adds on craigslist a while back, saying they are taking people who have graduated within the last 5 yrs. Might want to give them a try, or western express, don't know if they hire out of ca though!
Chinatown Thanks this. -
If he's been driving the 18 wheeler tankers it will be easier; if he's been driving the 10 wheelers it will require more training. He won't have any trouble being hired for OTR though. Try some companies that have their own CDL training. Some may just require a refresher course and it will be free if he agrees to work for the company a few months.

If he's been working in Redi-Mix for that long he must be good at it,why give up hourly pay plus overtime and being home every night to go work for these mega's that might pay less than minimum wage????

Yes, Western Express hires out of California.

Hi unknown, BINGO. For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone would do something like that. Especially in California where you don't get laid off like in winter in the mid-west. To Krang, welcome aboard, but take a newspaper and slap your husband in the head.!!!
77smartin and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
Cemex is looking for drivers its going to pay better than OTR and he be home every night. National cement is looking for semi drivers they will count it as experience.
-
Because driving a mixer sucks..have you ever done it?
-
Yes actually at Valley Bulk I used to pull loads to Vegas from Tehachapi then drive out the rest of the day in a mixer. National and Cemex both have Mixers, Bottom dumps and pnuematics. So I you drive for them you can switch it off. By the way here in Cali Mixer drivers tend to make real good dollars adn go home every night.

I wasn't discussing money and the OP didn't say anything about money, just that her husband wanted to go OTR.
It may be just me(and him)but I didn't care for driving mixer(s)
