Back in November I had my manifold taken off at cat to replace the studs. The manifold is leaking at the joint. They finally got the truck in the shop today and they're saying all they have to do is replace the packing. They say they don't have to take anything off to replace that. I bought an aftermarket manifold to put on to replace it and figured they could just put the other manifold on since I thought they had to take the stock one off. Are they telling me the truth? They want me to pay them $1500 to put the aftermarket manifold on.

If they are not taking the manifold off they must just be replacing the "boots" at the joints. Which is a wast of time IMO.
It's over an eight hour job, according to the labor guide, to r&r the manifold plus parts. Also the manifold and/or the precooler bracket may need some modification to fit. that will take extra time.

    Dorsey Thanks this.

    For an ACERT?
New exhaust gaskets (sleeves) and studs are more than that from cat.

put the new manifold on. it wont be a regret. $250 job? sounds like a hack job! the sleeves, from experience a waist of $$$ just use gaskets, it will flow better. and DON'T reuse the manifold studs. get new ones.

Dorsey, DL550CAT and Cetane+ Thank this.

Always use new gaskets and bolts/studs. The fasteners on CAT's break ALL THE TIME during removal. So much so that CAT sells a jig to use when drilling out broken bolts.

Eight hours is on the fast side, BTW.

If $250 is a flat rate for changing manifolds somebody will take a hosing when the job goes south and becomes a nightmare to complete it. IMO
