Sorry to disagree with you all but here in Michigan it is the law that you take the inside lane not the side lane. This means that in a left turn, you take the right lane of the pair of lanes, in a right turn you take the left lane of the pair.

This is so you can make a wide turn without having to cross over into another lane.

I drive up Southfield freeway every other day and at the 696 stop light, there are a pair of these right turn lanes. The outside lane turns into the first and only the first lane on the service driver but the inside lane is open because that gives a lot of room for trucks.

I'm realizing how many rules I apparently don't follow. My turns are usually the outside turning lane for both directions (closest to the middle of the street), sometimes the oncoming traffic lane (before the turn)... Take the advice of using the manual for TP once you pass the test.

The only turns I make are coming out of the parking lot. After that, I just go I a straight line from point A to point B. Anything in my way needs to move. Now who the heck put that 100 year old building in my way!:biggrin_25510::biggrin_2559:

Dang! I thought I had my answer.

So the law differs on this situation from state to state?

Hog both lanes, this move is called "the guard" it tells the other vehicles to stay out of the way, if you don't have the chance to use this monuver use inside lane and stretch out as far as you can and wait for traffic to clear your left side, there's no rush because you can always finish the turn even with a red light, same as a left turn as long as you are already in the intersection by law you can finish your turn even on a red light, I've seen so many rookie drivers panic trying beat the red light to finish a turn, that's why you always wants to stretch out into the intersection this gives you a guaranteed green light every time so Hog the lanes or stretch out and wait..... Easy fix 😎👍

I make a right turn from the left lane, unless there is enough room for the trailer to roam without me having to get in the left lane, it's pure slop to drag the tandems over the curb or encroach on the left lane.

Are you talking about turning lanes only? Because that makes no sense to me otherwise.
What does Michigan say about who is at fault if you drive over a car with your trailer when he's going straight through the intersection and you're turning right?

You are playing with fire and your day will come. Hopefully not with a motorcycle.

i almost ALWAYS take up two lanes, depending on how tight the new lane is going to be

i try to keep it close enough to the right where no one can come in, but wide enough to the left to make a smooth turn

and if needed, i enter the left lane of the new traffic, and if they have to backup, then so be it

believe it or not, i was taught this way by the megas, and i have found it works best

but never to i sit in the far right lane, that opens the door to too many problems
