The school I went to had 1 class room instructor that was vary good and had OTR time too. When he went to the head of the school about some things that needed fixing they told him suck it up or move on.......he moved on! One of the things he told me he would like the school to do was set up a chaining station so students would know how it was done but that is not why he left.
The field instructors where pretty good too but I also had time towing different size & type trailers so it came easy to me even the driving part.

I do have to say I don't know how the driving instructors could do it with some of the students. At times I wanted out of the truck not so much the bad shifting but running of red lights or heading for parked cars till told about them! That is when you put on the seat belts and we had bench seats in the truck.

I have "helped" people learn different things and it does take a certain type of person to teach.
Good luck to you on what ever you do.

Today at school we had a see side test. The guy in front of me completely screwed up. So he pulled out of the box and did his setup then he decided to just get out of the truck and fail that test and left the truck there. Then my instructor said it was my turn and said its looks like a decent setup just back it in. I was not ok with that at first. Becaue why did all the other guys get to pull from the box and set there self up and not me? But what did i DO? I decided to go along with it. Did my walk around and backed it right in perfectly with no pull ups.

So as I was backing it straight in I wanted to check my distance in back so I don't brake plain. So I pull the brakes and get out the truck. My instructor says to me test is done! I said no i'm checking my distance. He says "You need to tell me before you get out the truck your checking your distance" (I was never told this and no done this yet also) We went back and forth about it for few seconds he said just finished I got all angry at this point and did't even realize how close I was from breaking plain so WHAT DO I DO? BREAK PLAIN!!! and get a 60!!

Yea I know I screwed up but man I don't think it was fair test. I never got to setup my own truck and should have said nothing to me tell I finished my test. If everyone else got to pull from the box set there selfs up and what not why could't I? I was so angry lol

I would like to do that also, but I do not have enough experience driving. I have done a lot of adult instruction in my previous job, and think I would be good at with CDL students. I had 1 classroom instructor and 4 driving range instructors. One instructor on the driving range was avoided by the students as he came across kind of cold and not helpful. The other 3 were very good. But all them failed to assess the current driving skills of the students. We had one student that got into a truck by himself and had never driven a stick shift before....and he broke a brand new u-joint trying to stop without putting in the clutch. Another guy thought he was double shifting by pushing in the clutch twice before he shifted....I told him how to double shift. He simply had inadequate instruction on how to double clutch.

Also, we had no instruction on how to change tail lights or headlights....we had plenty of time to do that sort of simple repair. Also, we never got into a fuse box. We never changed a washer in a glad hand. We were told how to install a cage bolt, but we never did it. We weren't told how to use a vise grip to clamp off an airline so the other brakes would get enough air to work, nor told that such a thing would/could happen.

I am sure you have a lot more examples of simple repairs you can do to keep you rolling on the road, that you could share with students.
