I just wanted to say HI! and introduce my self. Folks call me Kenny. I am here in Iraq working a contract job (non-driving position). Contracting can be very unstable as was the case in January 2013 with I was stuck at home with no visa. No visa means no work. So I got my CDL and started driving. I worked for a little over 11 months for one of the larger automotive parts stores running the southeast. I enjoyed it alot, but I was still contracted to this company I work for now. So when the visa came in this past June, off to Baghdad I went. I have a good bit of down time which I use to try and keep a tab on current issues in trucking and what jobs might be available when I come home. I am extremely curious about Tanker and flatbed work. I live in the north Georgia area near Gainesville.
I have found this forum to be a great place with a vast amount of information. I also wanted to say thanks to all of you who take the time to share your experience so others can learn.
If anyone has any questions for me feel free to ask, but please be patient as the internet here is like a string and two cups, and sometimes the string breaks for a couple of days.
Best Regards
Kenny

Lots of good tanker and flatbed for you. Probably will be required to go through a refresher course since you havent driven in a while, but that's no problem either. Just contact the companies you're interested in and ask what they require for you to get back on the road.

Thanks for the information. I have seen a few of these around, but your list gives me a lot more to consider. I have Hazmat, tanker, TWIC, and have scheduled an interview with customs for the FAST Track for Mexico and Canada, when I return to the states later this month for R&R (hopefully). And of course I have a passport. I also have a Department of State security clearance, but can anyone tell me if there is a driving position where that would be beneficial ?

Fluor may still be hiring for driving positions in Afganistan. Some of the guys I drove with for KBR in Iraq went there and say it's a real ######## but the $$$ are good.
