Thanks for responses...feel like we are kinda getting in the weeds. Looks like I will stay with cummins, however still haven't heard any specifics that I was looking for. if International can't get basic parts then that's a problem. engines are blowing up then that's a Major problem. I would have thought that the long waits would have been cleared up by now seeing they have made those engines for 5 years.

Remember when Ford and Firestone screwed the goat with those tires they made specifically for the Explorer, and it ended up a bunch of rollovers, fatal accidents, etc? Yeah, that went on for nine years....S M D Thanks this.

Parts really isn't that much of a problem. The main problem with the wait times is two reasons, first, most trucks are under warranty and the repair process is super slow because we have to go through International's casefile basis for approval and this is a slow process. Second, warranty pays peanuts. A lot of dealers put warranty jobs on the back burner simply because they are such low paying revenue. A lot of cases required stupid redundant and unnecessary diagnostic tests that eat up a lot of hours and time we don't get paid for. Everyone is very tired and frustrated with this, believe me!

Let me be more specific on my deal. Mine derated and the dash lit up like a xmas tree....had to be towed. Dealer fixed it but took 4 days, said no parts. Did it again and got towed to back woods binder dealer. He didn't have schematics or qualified mechanic. Down 5 days waiting and then turned out to be pig tail lite on dash shorted and blew breaker which also happens to power regen circuit.......got new light Monday next.
Did it again! Only this time I had watched mechanic. I reset F10 breaker and restored power but warning lights still on. TM said don't drive truck cause you'll void warranty.
Ok, towed me in from 300 one way miles to junk yard. Gave boss a choice, another truck or another driver, make the call. I also told TM next time he goes to hunting lodge with binder guy don't shoot deer, shoot binder dealer.
Not only mine either, he had 12's 13 and 14's sitting at shop for weeks on end.Cat sdp Thanks this. -
I can't believe that people are still thinking about buying a Maxxf A rce . That thing is by far the biggest heaping pile of crap ever produced by a bunch of green engineering want to bes. Like Heavyd stated about the "case file base approval" being slow, it to is being run by the same green engineering dept. Most senior IH engineers that actually knew what a Diesel engine is either quit or were fired because they knew from the development stages that the maxxfArce would not run but management told them to shut up or leave. There is "NO LEGAL FIX" for these want to be engines. Hence the class action against Navistar. Navistar is now preaching "Uptime" that would be great for the new products, but what about the downtime for the poor guys that are stuck with the old??

I was looking at it from cost / benefit:
Real world number:
2012 prostar 360k miles for 42K with MF
2012 cascadia 375k miles for 69k with Detroit
and I am sure I can neg a much better price on the Prostar.
so basically 2 for price of one. From strictly a mathematical standpoint.... with 2 prostars running and let's say in the shop for 8 weeks out of year and 1 cascadia running in the shop for 3 weeks out of year, that would give me an additional 39 weeks running in the year. those numbers favor prostar with MF. AGREE/DISAGREE? -
What about the money spent in the shop......?
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
well in this scenerio both trucks are under warranty so repairs outside of warranty should be categorized as maintenance or standard breakdowns which would occur with any truck/engine combination. After warranty as long as repair cost did not exceed 20k per year on the MF engines then the profits from running the xtra weeks with 2 trucks would still exceed 1 truck profit. 20k per year in repairs is very generous. could even justify a engine swap with those figues.

You would still have repair cost with any engine outside of warranty. most important question is how much more money for repairs does it cost for MF vs detroit vs cummins...etc. from past experience most engines components cost approx. the same amount for repairs. There might be some differences but nothing outrageous. downtime seems to be the variable that can cause the most fluctuations in profits.

I like your business plan. Buy 2 prostars and 1 can run a few weeks while other is in the shop and then switch them out.
Dont forget about missed appt times and upset cutomers due to lack of reliability.
I'm on my 4th prostar since nov...my buddy on his 5th...all with less than 275k. Our company switches out of them when issues arise and put us in a different one fresh out of the shop while the old one waits its turn in line at dealer.
Id be interested to know just how many trucking companies have been bankrupted by th maxxforce engine?
