Manuals always seem to do better with mpg's. However, I have seen report of detroits DD15 and the DT12 getting good mpg's.

I seen cummins with ultrashift+ also making good mpg. Driving 70, at 19k pounds, 2.64 rear axles, warm weather, and gets 9 mpg driving indiana and ohio.

Does your 2015 have the new Volvo automatic package XE? If so, climbing the hills slow is exactly what it is designed to do. Most drivers have the mentality of mashing the foot to the floor. Maintain that speed at all costs even up hills against gravity. Doesn't matter if you drive a manual or auto, it's how you utilize your gearing properly to get the truck to maximize fuel. It's all physics. I drive a 2011 Volvo auto. I let the truck do the work for me on hills. I also drive on the foot (no cruise) most of the time. I watch the terrain and adjust my foot according to what the truck needs. I don't try to always keep the speed as I am working against the truck/physics. The last time I asked for the ECM total data on mpg I was getting 8.9 on the foot. I have a very light foot and watch my turbo boost gauge. More turbo=more fuel consumption.

I've heard on satellite radio that many of the newer trucks will or are already set up to give the acceleration or power that they feel you need to move the load .. So empty or loaded they will pick up speed about the same .. It helps them meet some fuel economy standard easier ..that's part of the reason they push autos on drivers .. The days of mashing on it to merge will be over I guess "sigh"

This is what I get with my Volvo 780/2008/ Volvo D13 and Eaton 13 manual:
My last 80,000 miles record pump to pump including regeneration and idling, I don't have APU.pulling dry van for Celadon Canada all kind of loads from 10,000 to 45,000lbs. The mpg gets lower with temperature , running here in Canada.

I haver over 1.4 mil original transmission and motor no in frame yet but I replaced camshaft only and injectors.
But in mpg ,.....I cant beat my buddies with i shift, no way,and I know to drive economic. I had my last truck automatic and wasted lots of $$$ ,I still believe this manual are more reliable and way cheaper to maintain/replace.

legit. Now that's the point. Manual is cheaper than auto, you gonna waste #### on automatic.

Only if it is an Allison automatic. Not anything like the auto shifts. A total class by itself.
