Hey everyone, just wanted to quickly introduce myself. My name is Sean and I'm a 35 year old trucking driving school student from NJ. I'm enrolled in the Smith and Solomon school in Bellmawr NJ and trying to learn everything that I possibly can. I have my CDL A permit and currently doing reps in the straight-line truck situated in the yard as well getting the hang of pre-trip inspections and airbrake tests. I am extremely fascinated by the trucking industry and everything it offers; which is why I always ask a billion questions about stuff. I wish I had done this ten years ago.
Anyway, thank you for reading and looking forward to getting to know everyone here.
New Student from NJ

Congratulations; choose a good company.
Start submitting applications right now; don't wait until you graduate.
If possible, get all the endorsements, a TWIC card, and passport or passport card. All these will give you more job opportunities. TWIC card is for entry to sea ports, chemical plants, military bases. Google for nearest TWIC office.
Couple of dry van companies are Watkins-Shepard and NFI, both with New Jersey terminals.Last edited: Feb 4, 2015

Thank you for the reply. In addition to my yard training, I was considering studying for a Hazmat endorsement as well. Doubles/Triples and Tankers, well, I'm not too sure I'd feel comfortable with them at the moment but I will give it consideration. I used to have a TWIC card years ago when I worked for a marine towing company as a dispatcher. I believe there is an office in Camden where I can reapply.
So I should start applying now? I'm still many weeks away from getting my CDL license. Do companies still interview you anyway? At the very least S & S has job placement I could use after graduation.
Thanks for the advice.bigtruckin89 and Chinatown Thank this. -
I highly recommend going right into tanker work. Those companies know what they're doing and they do hire new CDL grads. Trimac Transportation has the highest annual pay for new CDL grads at $60K-$80K, then after 24 months can jump to over $100K in the "Elite Fleet". Don't worry, those tanker companies ensure you're properly and fully trained before they let you go solo.
Here some that hire new CDL grads; not sure you're in the hiring area for all of them:
Trimac Transportation
Superior Carriers
SVTN
Tidewater Transit
CTL Transportation
Groendyke Transport
A&R Transport
Schneider Bulk
Some may have "experience required" on the websites, but ignore that and apply anyway. These companies bend their own hiring rules for high quality applicants.
You're already in school, so start submitting online applications right now. Don't wait until you graduate; this gives you time to sift through job offers and have a good job waiting the day you graduate.Kindle Thanks this. -
