Not saying that states can't / won't have slight differences in policy (Texas doesn't allow the HazMat endorsement process to be pursued unless you have a CDL, so that basically means a truck school graduate can't walk out the DMV with his first CDL license having the HazMat endorsement.)

 

If you ain't getting extra pay for expedite hazmat loads, then you need to reconsider accepting those loads.

 

What state are you in? My HAZMAT is good until 2020, my license expires in 2016. When I renew my lic next year my HAZMAT will still be on there until 2020. Both dates are on my license. In 2020 my license will still be good, but the HAZMAT will expire and THEN I'll have to re-test to keep it on there.

Permission to take it? Curious again, I went into the DMV and took the HAZMAT test on an unexpected day off, after I passed the DMV fingerprinted me and sent it in to TSA. A couple weeks later I got the approval letter in the mail and a couple days after that my new license showed up.

 

My TX CDL was renewed 1/2012 and my hazmat exp 2/16.
gotta get your fax right. I've been hauling it since 2006.
also you don't have to stop at R/R that have the EXEMPT sign under the crossing sign.
Many RR are out of use. So be on the lookout for those.
Always a good idea to take some strong sticky tape with you as one of those placards can blow off on a rare occasion. No good getting caught by DOT. That's the stuff they look for.
Other than that HAZMAT is a piece of cake. There's nothing dramatic about hauling it but I did find the test to be tricky.
So do your homework.

 

The auto industry has many exemptions. A load of car batteries and nothing else is not a placarded hazmat load -- anyone can haul it. Add a box of those battery terminal fiber washers? Now it needs to be placarded.

Likewise a truckload of oil in consumer packaging is not placarded.

Those signs are for pickups carrying hazmat (pesticide trucks, etc). If you are permitted and get the green light, you can bypass Ohio. See the prepass brochure...

Correct -- assuming you have the Alliance for Uniform transportation of hazmat permit

 

A whole tanker of oil is not even required to be labeled hazmat

 

If I'm getting 100% consistently on the Hazmat practice tests (at top of this page) am I prepared to pass the written test?
