Hi all !!!!
I will try to be as brief as I can and hope some can help. I enrolled at a Georgia Technical College to get my CDL. The program was a evening program for 10 weeks, 5 hrs. day, 4 days/week. Well I got to the end of the program and they gave the school's test, which of course included: The Pre-Trip, Skills and Road Test. The instructor gave the test in the order as I listed. The instructor let us know that you have to pass each section to move to the next. I passed the Pre Trip but failed the Skills Section. The instructor did not allow me to take the Road Test, most importantly the instructor did not allow me to take the State Test as well. With that said, there were three classes in the course (I'll use generic numbers here) 101, 102 & 103. The 101 Class was the two weeks we studied to get the CDL Permit. This was no problem, the instructor simply read the book to us and told us what was important (I could have done that. LOL!). Now here is where it gets interesting. I "assume" that once we got our Permits, the 102 Class began. There we worked on driving where we did days bobtailing and shifting gears for about a week or week and a half. From that point forward we began to drive on the road (with a Trailer) logging our time. We drove two days a week @ 1.5 hrs./day and then we did two days a week of range work for the rest of the course. There were evaluations done during the time we were driving. On the last day driving, we were evaluated and I did good and the instructor placed on the evaluation (that I signed off on) "Ready to test". With regards to the Range Time, I felt as if we got little if any instruction while out there. We got quite a bit the first couple of weeks on the range but after that, it looked as if the class was on their own. The members of the class started to help each other (blind leading the blind). The instructors were not watching to see our weaknesses and each of us had something. I thought figuring it out on your own was just part of the deal. We had to pass all six skills. I got all but two and still failed.
Now the class is done and I the instructor did not allow me to take the State Test to get my license. To make matters worse, I was under the impression that since I logged of the class, Road and Range time, the school would simply allow me to take maybe the 103 and simply do a couple of three weeks and test again. They said I would have to take 102 and 103 over for eight weeks. To do this would cost close to $1200. I have already spent $1800 for the previous mentioned courses.
Honestly I believe this to be SHULLBIT! I believe that I should have at least been able to take the State Test and if I passed, the course would have noted and the grade reflected (isn't that the point?). Oh by the way, I learned that they are the third party testers for the state (SMH).
Now my question for the forum is:
Am I able to take the Georgia DDS test on my?
If so, what is the process?
Has anyone else had this "type" of experience?
Thank you all for your in sight

Yes, you can take the test on your own, but the problem is finding a truck to use and someone to drive the truck to the testing center for you. Another problem is, trucking companies will want to see the diploma from the school. I'm assuming the school didn't give you a diploma.

Thanks Chinatown, I may have friends that may be able to help with the first task. With regards to the second, I may need some divine intervention because I will not receive a Diploma. With that said, I am employed now and getting my CDL was part of my "retirement" career (retirement planned for early 50s). It was and has been a goal of mine to drive and all I get out of this is that it appears as if the game is rigged. If it wasn't there would not be a driver shortage. I feel as if the "game" is to deflate the number of drivers. What are your thoughts?

Specifically what on the skills test did you fail? For the State Test its Pretrip, Pad, then Road Test. You must pass each to continue to the next. Once you pass one part you do not have to take it again.
-
Let me get this straight ....... You can't pass the skills tests for the school but if you take the state test they will pass you? I can't imagine a state examiner being more lax on your skills that a school trainer. Maybe you had better get back to class and take it serious!

My thoughts is this, there should be a law against schools like this that takes the students money and doesn't train them the correct way. There should be 100% success rate meaning you stay at the school till you are ready to move on and until you pass. Many of the schools there heart isn't in it.All they see when coming to work is a paycheck and can't wait till their day is done. It's very unfortunatete ppl don't do a complete research on the school they attend.

Please believe me that I took it serious. With that being said, we were tested on skills during the class, and I was a bit "lucky" to pass but I flamed out on the school "final" test. The decision is purely financial now. If they would have said take only the 103 Class I would have but to make me take a class that I thought I passed in the 102 is ridiculous.

Patty,
I can agree with you somewhat, I don't want anyone ripped off, but having been an instructor (not driving) there are some students that will not study or pay attention and expect to be passed like it was high school. Where I took my CDL classes (Delta Technical College) will allow you to return to class at no charge till you pass. However if you don't "get it" during the original class period you probably aren't going to get it. Some people simply do not have the mental and physical coordination or spacial perceptions to grasp this business.
I think sometimes we drivers underestimate our own skills!!Hcindians5 Thanks this. -
I was looking at driving only 2 days a week,1.5 hrs.I obtained my cdl thru Iowa Central in Fort Dodge. That's one college I would highly recommend.I was one of the more slower learners meainly at my backing. My instructor worked with me one on one till I finally aced it and was ready to take the test.We also had a lot more drive and range time. How can one possibly learn anything only a couple times a week.Iowa Central did guarantee you pass and everything they said to me they stood behind their word.Theres so many poor excuses for schools.
rexmanno Thanks this. -
