Hey everyone. I have been researching the possibility of replacing my factory radio in my truck for awhile now. The important thing is that, no wires be cut. And that I am able to quickly swap the factory radio back in before putting my truck in the shop.
What I found, was that the connector on the back of the radio is used across several brands of car makes and models. I also found that if you ask almost anyone, they will tell you that they can't get the connector for a volvo. A website online will sell you one for $25.00! But I just bought a "close enough" match for $8.00. And the product is made by the same company.
In an effort to help others, I will post wiring diagrams and links to "Metra's Product page" here. As soon as I receive the product in the mail, and confirm it works, I will update this thread.
Replacing the Volvo Factory Radio

The wiring harness I bought off amazon worked out great. The thing to remember, is that since it was not made specifically for the volvo, the wire colors are wrong. I bought a cheap Pioneer, which is working out great. It sounds better, and I have no engine noise problems like when you use an fm transmitter. The adapter cost me $7.89 with free 2 day shipping with my amazon prime membership. And the radio was $75.~.
I had to work out the wiring by pin number and write it out to work with the radio's harness. I did not use the new radio's metal sleeve, and left the volvo's sleeve in place. I simply slide the new radio into the old sleeve and it is secure enough not to shake or fall out of the dash. By doing it this way, I can quickly slip my radio out and the volvo's radio back in before I put the truck in the shop. And no one knows the difference.
Here is a link to the product I bought off Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I2T4G6
I will post the pin out to wire color guide for reference, but I warn you to check it before you use it. There might be a difference between your truck and mine.
So, incidentally, my truck is a Volvo built June 2010.
A1 - Not used
A2 - Not Used
A3 - Park Lights, but Not Used
A4 - Ignition Switch
A5 - Power Antenna - This is used for the rectifier thinga ma jigger in Volvos
A6 - Not Used
A7 - Battery Positive
A8 - Chassis Ground
B1 - B8 are the speakers, and they did match the colors on the harness I purchased.
The c connector on the rear of the Volvo radio are specific to Volvo's and you can just ignore that connector.Last edited: Oct 20, 2012

Yeah, here what 2 years later I'm looking at doing the same.. I found that same harness
[h=1]Metra 70-9401 and yes... there's one pin out of place that has to be changed but the c connector ( the blue & yellow connections ) C1 & C3 those supply the power to my delphi radio... so very important to be able to connect them ( without cutting ).....[/h]Arty157 Thanks this. -
how do you actually take the radio out of the dash? that has been my problem i can't figure out how to do it, i even called a volvo shop and they said i need a special radio remover tool to do it. It can't be that difficult to do with just regular stuff please help it's a stock radio and i'm sick of listening to the same cd over and over. It's a 2014 volvo.

A3 should be hooked to your dash lights. That way if you dim the dash the radio wont act like a beacon and blind you.

You might want to check Cruthfield Audio, they've had a good reputation, as far as listings, to fit most vehicles. Saw 780's etc listed. I know 780 is a current truck model, but not sure if Volvo made a car model with same number.

It's like $5-10 should be available at Walmart

Anyone have a radio wiring diagram pinout for a 2009 Volvo VNL 670? I got an aftermarket headunit, I purchase the adapter, now I just need to know which wire is what at which pin to finish the plug and play harness.

Most big trucks use a VW adapter for the radio. It's easiest to have the tool to get the radio out. Any audio shop will have them. The tool may be with the owners manual to the truck.
