Thought I'd post and see what everyone's else experience is currently. I haul all steel only, almost to default. It has been brutally slow since November! Now I know that some of that is seasonal slow down through the holiday's but by now it should be getting really busy. I'm just not seeing it, rates are in the toilet and the available freight is thin to say the least. I'm seriously considering taking the darn side kit off and trying my hand at open deck. What's say you? :biggrin_2556:

Wouldn't hurt to try, take a couple tarps, you can still haul steel if need be.

    ReeferOhio Thanks this.

Aint that about normal? Production kicks butt up until the first of the year, then comes back slowly in the spring as the surplus is used up.
I tried production welding for 8 months and this is about the time of year I gave up and quit due to the 20 hr weeks.
I sure hope things kick into gear pretty quick, but I never see it happen till about mid May as a rule.

I'd say freight is half what it was this time last year. Don't get me wrong the there are loads but nothing like this time last year and rates are down 35-40%.

They expected to have a record year and just has not materialized. Any I have two customers that are massive on the stock exchange and even they seem surprised.

I have heard that it had to do with the strike on the west coast ( I dont believe that) Some industry people that I spoke with said it had to do with the fact that the dollar was strong and a lot of overseas steel being shipped in....Some accidents at plants and the overall crappy winter so take your pick on what to believe.....Most of the places that I deliver are full and we are jammed up waiting for them to make room.... I have seen plenty of legal loads but permitted loads have been slim to none....of course next week is going to be the end of month song and dance....but after that I think the ports will open and we should be fine.....

Yeah, right after the holidays they were trying to get me out with a reefer (WA state to PA) for 2.00 a mile. told them to pound sand, went and hauled some logs and second round a hew log rolled off the bunk, broke 3 ribs and my right ankle, lol. Not a profitable year so far for me either. Hope things get better soon, Im pacing the floor like a caged animal now!
