A couple thoughts:
1. If your truck doesn't get better fuel mileage going slower then your rear gear is wrong.
2. These guys that say they "drive 75", I don't know where you drive but it's not in the northeast. If you try that in traffic all that's going to happen is you're going to spend money to get on someone else's bumper...tailgate for a while.....spend more money to get to the next bumper.....repeat. You might *think* you're driving 75, but you're only driving 65. Might as well drive 65 from the get go.
3. Speaking of wear on the equipment....it's much harder to dodge pot holes at 75.
4. I bet the fast lane crowd blows alot of tires. Especially in the summer. I heard this on the CB ~25 years ago and I never forgot it.....
Driver 1 (young guy): "Aw %^&* I blew a tire"
Driver 2 (old guy): "Of course you did dumb ###. 80 mph, 80,000 lbs and 80 psi. What did you think was going to happen. See ya!" -
Thanks to the new HOS laws nobody can really afford to even stop and take a whiz unless it perfectly aligns with our DOT preplans!
I get pretty decent mpg just using the torque band as intended and not running the jake on the rolling hills. This is a great thread, thanks!Oxbow Thanks this. -
I normally run 62 - 63 (and get passed by everything). Today, I tried it a little bit different. Got 42000 in the tube. Headed east from Kimball, NE on I 80. Slight tail wind. Was keeping it fairly steady (+/- 4 or 5) at 68. Not using the cruise. Boost was consistently at or under 15 psi. People net was showing between 10.2 and 10.6, but mostly at 10.5 mpg.
Now I contribute that to alot of variables. But every little bit adds up to decent mileage for today.
Like I said, people net showed. In reality, it's off by around .6 or so, too high. Either way, high nines is phenomenal for me. I'll take it. Cause tomorrow, I may have a head wind.... -

If people tailgate me more than a few miles with no reason too I have gotten in the habit of just flipping off the cruise, no throttle, and let truck slow down until they pass me. when no other traffic is around of course. had a big truck do it, and got down to nearly 20 mph before the moron passed me. and he had been following me at 66 for like 10 miles. In his defense, he was so dang close to my bumpee probly had a hard time pulling around. I just ain't having it, especially at night and they will ride just a little to the left with that headlight right in my mirror. I'm too old for that jive.

I just saw a Swift driver getting 9 mpg at 52 mph in the TA parking lot.

oh, and btw. in my example what I meant when I said "only hypothetical" was that I recognized it was an unlikely real world scenario, and only meant as an illustration. I guess a few of you missed that. I see I touched a nerve with a few of you slow drivers. good, do the math. If you have no data other than what your truck will do at 55 or 60, then you really don't know do you ? Same goes for me, if I don't give 55 or 60 a try, I shouldn't assume it will be 8.0 or 7.8, or anything.
Also, not to be argumentative 😆 BUT, the logic of some of you slow guys is flawed to think everyone who drives fast stops often. Of course if a guy goes around you twice, that's who you remember. But do you remember the ones who just go around you once ? Plus, do you ever stop ? I'll bet most of you do, at least for your 30. So when you do, do you pass same people or are you so slow you never catch back up to anyone ? The truth is everyone stops, some more than others. I don't think driving speed has to do with stopping frequency. I know plenty of guys who drive fast and don't stop.
I also want to point out there is good fast driving as well as poor. Depends on flow of traffic and congestion for me. lots of times say between Indy and Columbus I gotta roll about 62. My goal isn't pass as many as I can and when traffic is bunching up I try to ride in the gaps like sheeple says. but say I-90 across MN or SD ?, it's just as safe at 70 as 55, perhaps more so. You ever notice at 55 that when someone doing 61 passes you it creates a 1/4 mile of cars behind them which takes 10 minutes to sort back out after guy finally gets around you ? It's okay, you're in your rights but jus sayin while we're throwing mud on a wall to see what sticks there is some danger created with 55 too. -
Kimball, NE 4715'
Omaha, NE 1090'
You could turn around in Omaha and head west on what appears to be a flat interstate, going 55, getting 7mpg and tell yourself "see, I just knew my truck was meant to drive 68mph."
There are lots of reasons to drive fast, good fuel mileage just isn't one of them...Oxbow Thanks this. -
If not on elogs and driving slow.... that 30 is pretty easy to log without actually stopping.Oxbow, jdiesel3406, ramblingman and 2 others Thank this.
