If you leased on with a large Canadian carrier pulling their 53'van trailer, their insurance, plates ,fuel surcharge etc, and their freight you may average $1.50 per mile Canadian if your lucky. Some pay more but a lot pay less.Unfortunately the only $2.20 US you will see is in your dreams.nate980 Thanks this.

And your dreams will soon turn into a nightmare.

Your driver an AMERICAN or CANADIAN ? Not many outfits in the Toronto area look to lease truck and trailer usually just want the truck to pull their company trailers
-
So how are these owner ops making any $? what are they pulling to make decent money?

It would seem you've answered your own question by probing the issue:
If you've secured +$2.50/mile freight (in CAD, of course) you are most likely doing better than most o/o in the Toronto area. I'm not sure about guys taking % of the load earn, but most companies looking for mileage based o/o aren't paying nearly what you are currently making.
Maybe be working up some quotes from direct shippers would reveal better rates than the carriers are offering? Hard to say, I'm not in sales but we hardly ever haul broker OR direct freight out of Toronto, it's pretty much always LTL loads through our LTL division.
Sounds like giving Toronto a miss might be a good plan, or try to secure some direct shippers at the very least!
