I use my boost gauge, not my speedometer. I balance going as fast as I can with keeping boost down. Speedo is only to be sure speed limit is not broken.

I very well may be doing 55 mph into a 20 mph head wind but I will surely use gravity to my benefit.

Been driving like this since fuel rose over $1/gal.

I try to run mostly an night and set my cruise aka right foot at around 73 an whatever the flow of traffic is of the day. my truck usually averages 6.5 to 6.8 good enough for me I like to get it done and get home.

My next truck will be an aero. No more hoods for me. I'm getting 6.5mpg and really trying for it. I wish I could just set the cruise and get 7 all day.

someone should come up with a device similar to Pittsburgh Power Box, but instead of turning up the horsepower and torque, it would allow you to turn down the max boost and/or horsepower. Unsafe ? maybe an on/off toggle.

danny, i skim read thru this so bear me forgiveness if this is out of context...but I think what the freight pays is a big factor to us.

what will really stir the pot is the cheaper the pay, the faster we (i say we because three on my authority all the same way) drive. We gotta get that cheap crap off the trailer and into a better paying lane. tie the truck up for 3 days on a 1400 mile run no thanks. lets say it paid 2200. load on Monday morning, off on tues afternoon.. Im reloading 2.50 a mile in Kentucky on Wednesday, while slow poke driver is still unloading. Ive grossed $1100 a day even and 5 mpg and 2.60 a gallon its still over $700 day net.

I read on here a long time ago and I thought it was pretty accurate. TWO types of O/O.

    1. pro revenue.
    2. pro spend less.

OBLIVIOUSLY we all want more revenue and to spend less, this is getting down to the FUEL mileage question...speed up spend more to make more loads or slow down and take longer but less fuel cost.

while 1 will hammer down and get 5 mpg but load more loads in a month to make more revenue but spent more.
number 2 didnt spend as much but didnt "gross" as much revenue either.

they probably NET about the same, but in my case slowing down would cost some weekends at home time....ill stick to number one.

Danny at 69 to 70 mph average...id put you in number 1

I don't know if the logic is sound, but I like to get cheap loads off quick too. I feel dirty pulling them.

If some of these guys knew how I drove in my 20's.... well, they probably wouldn't believe it. they got lots of guys believing tires fly apart at 75 mph now. lol. I had a couple trucks with one or two holes left to go at 75 !

I think 69 is pretty tame, but now I'm finding out that's maniac speed.

I dunno, I'm gonna be gathering data. I wanna know what it costs to drive different speeds.

I run the same lane every week, load on Monday, off load Thursday. Driving 30 or 90 keeps me in the truck the same amount of time. Sure I get more "rest" time going 90 but that's not what I am looking for while on the road. I am looking for safety and money. There is always two sides to the coin, slowing down can only increase profit in my situation.

BTW I work for a small company and am not an O/O, the company does not offer a fuel bonus. What they do offer is good wages, very nice trucks that are very nicely equipped and good home time. I will tell you this though, when it comes time for raises and new trucks they take into consideration the mileage the truck is getting, how hard drivers are on brakes and if you are wrecking stuff. True merit based wages.
