You have to have the miles you drive within each respective state lines, supposed to record the routing, some states what that info and the number of gallons ,not the money, you buy in each respective state. That is about it in a nut shell. Lots of info on the net in regards to file your quarterly requirement.

I assume by HUT your talking about New York? If your on a toll road in NY you do not pay IFTA tax. All other roads you do. When you do your HUT/NY filing there are two inputs. All miles traveled in NY and miles on a toll road. You only pay for the non toll road miles. When you do your regular IFTA filing you only write down the non toll road miles for NY.

I use a Rand McNally 720 GPS. It tracks the miles per state, province, day, month, quarter, year. I did my IFTA this morning and I just click on the quarter and it shows all the miles driven in each state and province. I do have a trip sheet for each trip where I write things down as well. Just in case Rand McNally goes belly up. I don't do the East coast, but Skate-Board explained that part already anyway.

I do the same as Vikingswen. I use a 720 also and you can also input the fuel data and it will keep track of that for you also by State and date separated by quarters. It also separates toll and non-toll miles
